The Background
Produced between 1996 and 2002 the 2nd generation of the now infamous Range Rover has now reached classic car and cult status. Offering great comfort and go anywhere ability the P38 Range Rover now offers great Value for money. This Holland and Holland version was the cream of the crop back in 2000, with only 400 ever produced, only 100 examples stayed in the UK thus making it a super rare car.
With such a limited run it makes this P38 Range Rover rarer than some of the best supercars on the market, you’ll be hard pressed to find another one on the UK roads.Exterior (2).jpg3.89 MB
The History
This P38 has had a bit of an interesting modern life, little is known about the car before the current owner bought it. They found it in a barn and entered a bidding war with Jack Barclays of London (a high-end Bentley dealer in London) ; both parties had the intention of purchasing the car to restore. The current owner ended up obtaining the car and set about putting the P38 back on the road with a major overhaul of the 4.6L V8 and other running gear.
When it was finished it went off to enjoy a short career as a Yacht charter car, this just goes to show how high end these P38’s were. Due to recent global events the current owner ended up with the car again and has decided to put it back up for sale.
It has lived a life of two halves being found in a barn to enter the high-end world of the Yacht business. This proves how versatile these modern classic Range Rovers are and this one will continue to cart the new owner around in opulence and style.Details (3).jpg3.23 MB
The Paperwork
Within the glove box there were a few pieces of paperwork that go to show that this car has been looked after since the current owner put it back together. There are small invoices for things as simple as O Rings and hose cooling pipe but there is one major bill for £1550 which refers to 1 head gasket set, 2 reconditioned cylinder heads and a full-service kit. This work was carried out in April of 2021 so you should be put at ease with having to do anything with the head gasket anytime soon. Paperwork (2).jpg3.06 MB
The Interior
The emphasis of these Holland and Holland limited run P38’s was the interior and its thanks to this that means the interiors wear well. The Cheshire grade brown leather in this P38 is in great condition with little to no marking, with the car now being this age the leather has had time to break in properly and is soft and supple. A cool feature about some of the leather in this type of P38 is finished in a sort of wood grain effect to match that of wooden trims around the car, this is a level of detail you never tend to see on any car.
The wooden trims are the same wood that Holland and Holland use for the gun stocks and as a result it is of the highest grade, which subsequently means that they don’t tend to deteriorate much over the years. The headliner, unlike many Land/Range Rover products of the time has not sagged, the navigation system still appears to work showing picking up the location of the car at the time of photography.
A few nice little features to also pick up with about this car specifically is the inclusion of the brown rubber mats, only available for the Holland and Holland, the mats in this car are in great condition considering the age and mileage. Another few items of note are within the boot, the parcel shelf is specific to the Holland and Holland and is in great condition, you will also find the CD multichanger and navigation system working in the boot and also a full-size spare under the boot floor.Interior (20).jpg3.68 MB
The Exterior
Finished in a stunningly deep and glossy Tintern Green the exterior of this P38 is in good condition with a few cosmetic marks that should be resolved with a full detail of the car. The green exterior really compliments the brown leather interior.
The P38 has extreme road presence and the Holland and Holland is just the same with the big statue of the car and adjustable air suspension on all four corners you will be able to cruise down the motorway in amazing comfort.
One minor thing of note on the exterior of this P38 is that the offside front exterior door handle is a little bit stiff, but it does open the door so you can get in and out okay. Exterior (5).jpg3.02 MB
The Mechanics
Fitted with the monstrous 4.6L V8 this P38 sounds mega, with such a big engine to crank over you’d think it may take a while to start, but thanks to the current owner installing a new battery it starts fairly quickly after turning the key. The air suspension will then raise itself to the correct height and off you go.
The V8 is twinned to a 4-speed automatic gearbox which is tuned to be the perfect cruising machine. With a little bit of persuasion this car will shift down the road at a fair rate of knots.
As was noted in the paperwork section there has recently been major engine work carried out on the car to make sure that it will run perfectly fine for the new owner.Engine Bay (5).jpg2.68 MB
The Appeal
With this version of the P38 being so rare it is uncommon for them to pop up for sale in the UK, so this is your chance to bag a great example of a rare modern classic. As has been described this P38 is in both good physical and mechanical fettle and will carry the new owner to whatever far flung corner of the world they want to explore.
The great soundtrack of the 4.6L V8 will never fail to put a smile on your face as you motor down the road. Twinned to the smooth auto box as well this car will just munch miles, it does what it does effortlessly with a brutish charm.
This is a truly rare example that culminates the two much loved British institutions of Range Rover and Holland and Holland. It is the perfect country living Range Rover ready to tackle anything thrown at it.
