2000 Range Rover P38a Holland & Holland

Highlights

  • 1 of 100 UK-delivered Holland and Holland models
  • Bespoke gun cabinet / drinks cabinet
  • Significant recent expenditure
  • Featured during the Platinum Jubilee concours at Windsor Castle

The Appeal

Introduced in 1994, the second-generation Range Rover - designated the P38a internally - succeeded the original ‘Classic’ model, and remained in production until 2001, with over 167,000 built and and endless legacy forged by Land Rover of Solihull.
For those looking for more exclusivity from their Range Rover, a number of run-out special editions were commissioned towards the end of the production run, including this exceedingly rare Holland & Holland example.
Only 400 were built, all of which were finished in Tintern Green metallic, featured significant interior upgrades, and the option for bespoke entertainment, picnic or other high-end equipment to be custom-made for the vehicle. In total, 400 of these exclusive H&H models were produced, of which only 100 were sold on the UK market, with far fewer than that surviving to this day.
This particular example is not only exceedingly rare by default, but also is one of the vehicles not fitted with the ‘entertainment package’ with the original owner instead specifying a bespoke drinks cabinet and gun cabinet to be fitted in the boot of the vehicle, in the pursuit of creating the ultimate hunting and country pursuit vehicle.
In the care of the current owner for almost ten years and with significant recent expenditure at the hands of Jaguar Land Rover Classic, this is an example not to be missed by anyone looking to obtain what is one of the rarest and most desirable production variation of the P38a.

Documentation from the 2022 Platinum Jubilee Concours
First registered on 14 September 2000, this one-of-100 UK-delivered Holland & Holland special edition was based upon the top-specification Range Rover P38a, with the 4.6-litre V8 engine, mated to the ZF four-speed automatic transmission.
Specified from new by the first keeper with a bespoke gun/outdoor pursuits cabinet in the boot, including port/whiskey glasses, collapsable picnic table, gun rack and mats to save the luxurious carpets in the load bay from the inevitably muddy and wet gun dogs after a day of sporting pursuits.
With over 30 hours of hand-built upgrades and finishing touches, all of the Holland & Holland commissions were finished in Tintern Green with colour-matched 18-inch ‘Hurricane’ wheels, whilst the cabin was covered in high-quality dark saddle leather with contrasting leather piping, hand-cut and finished solid French walnut inlays (as used to make Holland and Holland shotgun stocks) and bespoke H&H inlays.
Purchased by the vendor in 2013, they report that up until 2021, this rare variation of the now-iconic P38a required only routine maintenance. However, following a period laid-up in storage, the choice was made in 2021 to send the vehicle off to Jaguar Land Rover Classic for a no-expense-spared mechanical restoration and overhaul, which cost in excess of £15,000.
These works by JLR included the following items:
  • Full replacement/reconditioning of the braking system
  • Full replacement and overhaul of suspension and steering components
  • New battery and tyres
  • New exhaust system from the catalytic converters back
  • Full health check of the engine, including head-gasket checks, cylinder block porosity check, thermostat housing check and header tank cap check, with no concerning findings reported and the block reported to be in good health.
In addition to the above, the car was given an in-depth major service at the same time in May 2021, and a further minor service has recently been carried out in May 2022.
Following the mechanical overhaul by JLR classic, this 1-of-100 H&H was featured in the 2022 Platinum Jubilee Concours in the Car & Classic ’70 years of British Motoring’ display, where it drew plenty of admiring looks, comments and even royal approval, with Princess Michael and Prince Michael touring the display and giving their approval and admiration of the vehicle.
Of particular note is that all of the originally supplied equipment, including glasses, picnic table legs/top and other H&H specific wares remain with the vehicle, and will be included in the sale.

The Interior

  • Luxurious saddle leather interior
  • Full complement of Holland and Holland glassware
  • Very good condition throughout
Inside, this well-appointed special-edition Range Rover remains in very good order throughout, having been carefully cosseted and cherished throughout its lifetime, with the owners even going to such lengths as protecting the deep-pile carpet over-mats with the OE rubber items from a ‘standard’ Range Rover.
The seats are all entirely free of any rips, tears or damage, with only some light creases and minor marks to the outer edges of the bases attesting to years of enjoyment and use.
Up above, the headlining was recently replaced in May 2022 and remains in like-new condition throughout. The seatbelt webbing shows some sign of wear, though this does not affect its operation.
Elsewhere, the various solid wood inlays, chrome details and high-traffic areas wear a light commensurate usage patina, minor marks and blemishes, though no heavy damage or wear beyond what would be considered in-line with the rest of the vehicle’s cherished condition.  There is also a small crack in the plastic on the instrument binnacle, though this does not obscure the dials.
In the rear, the custom H&H cabinet remains in great condition, as does the load bay, which shows some light wear to the nearside trims. The over-mats for the boot are also present-and-correct with the vehicle.
The vendor notes that all systems are working as they should be, including the air conditioning, braking and suspension systems, though the screen for the satellite-navigation system is beginning to pixelate.

The Exterior

  • Presents in good condition overall
  • Recently-fitted new tyres in May 2021, less than 4,000 miles ago
  • Unique H&H Tintern Green bodywork
Finished in model-specific Tintern Green, the bodywork of this P38a remains in very good, but not concours condition.
The main blemish visible is located on the nearside corner of the rear bumper, which has some scuffs and scratches. The rear vinyl-covered C-pillars are also slightly faded and show some wear, particularly the offside item.
Elsewhere, the bodywork is in good order, with no sign of any impact damage, unsightly scuffs or large blemishes, beyond the usual light commensurate marks around the door handles, stone chips to the front end and other wear in keeping with unrestored 22-year-old paintwork.
Looking closer, the nearside lower fog light shows some signs of discolouration, but there is no damage to any of the glass, light lenses or windows.
All four wheels are in very good condition, with only some light marks, chips and a very minor graze noted to the outer edge of the front nearside wheel. Each wheel is wrapped in matching premium Michelin Pilot Sport 4 SUV rubber.

The Mechanicals

  • Extensive overhaul by JLR classic at a cost of over £15,000
  • Major service in May 2021, minor in May 2022
  • “Drives better than new”
Under the bonnet, the 4.6-litre V8 engine has been given an extensive overhaul and health-check by Jaguar Land Rover Classic, and is reported to be in rude health throughout. The vendor states that the mechanical condition is so good, in fact, that it “probably drives better now than when it came out of the factory!”
The engine, drivetrain and braking system have all been refurbished irrespective of cost, and a full breakdown of the works carried out can be found in the gallery below, with the rest of the documentation.
Underneath, the chassis shows some signs of age, flaking paint and wear, though any known issues were rectified by JLR Classic.
The most recent service took place in May 2022, and the most recent MoT took place on 16 May 2022, showing a clean first-time pass with no advisory items at 93,716 miles.

Summary

One of just 100 UK-delivered examples of just 400 produced, given approval by Royalty and with over £15,000 in recent expenditure at the hands of JLR Classic, this 2000 Range Rover (P38a) Holland & Holland special is a useable, mechanically renewed and concours-featured example that the next owner simply needs to jump in and continue to enjoy.

Ammontare dell'offerta Incremento
Da £0 a £9,999 £100.00
Da £10,000 a £49,999 £250.00
Da £50,000 a £99,999 £500.00
£100,000 + £1,000.00

Superamento immediato dell'offerta
