The Appeal

The Range Rover has always been the king of the road since its introduction in the 1970s.

The second generation, or P38, built upon the success of the Range Rover Classic. With its unparalleled luxury and off-road credentials, the P38 not only built upon the success of the first generation but paved the way for every generation after, all the way up to the newest 5th generation the L460 launched this year.

Nowadays the P38 offers all of this comfort for a fraction of the cost of a new Range Rover, with this example having been through a large mechanical rebuild recently it is now ready for its next adventure.

This car has also been converted from air suspension to springs, a vital modification that means you don’t have to worry about the air-suspension system sagging when you turn your back.

With summer approaching this will be the perfect motorway cruiser, eating up the miles as you road trip down to your summer getaway. And when summer turns to autumn and then eventually winter this car is excellent for any tricky road condition you may encounter making it a perfect all-rounder.

The History and Paperwork

 • First registered for use on the UK roads on the 29th of September 2000 this P38 starts its long 22-year history.
 • It was mentioned on the day that the photos were taken that there is a sizeable history file that will come with the car, however, this was not present at the      time
 • There were some pieces of paperwork present, however, like quite a few MOT certificates showing that she has been well looked after throughout the years
 • Along with the papers present, there is an LPG Conversion Certificate dated 2004, this was a popular modification at the time, and with fuel prices the way they are at the moment the next owner may be pleased to see this
 • The LPG system has been serviced within the past few thousand miles too
 • There will be two Range Rover P38 workshop manuals included within the sale, these are hard to come by and expensive when bought on their own
 • A couple of Land Rover handbooks are present too, one being the original owner’s handbook and the other being for the In-car entertainment. The service book was not present, but this could be with the rest of the paperwork
 • Another good modification to have on one of these older Range Rovers is a spring conversion kit, luckily this example has one. This offers peace of mind that the complicated air-suspension system will not sag or break on you when you’re out and about
 • It was mentioned that the engine has also received a lot of work recently and that it was possibly a new engine, it did start up and idle nicely during the photoshoot
 • A modern and up to date V5c is also present

The Interior

 • Sumptuous cream leather with green piping
 • DVD players set into the headrests
 • Harman/Kardon system fitted from factory
We know today that Range Rover is a byword for interior comfort and experience, this P38 lives up to that name too.

With lovely cream leather seats, green carpets, and DVD players in the rear of the front passenger seat headrests. There are a few areas that could do with a quick once over but that is part of the fun of a modern classic and you will be in the driving seat to make the car to your taste.

The cream leather seats are all in good condition all round with no rips or tears to the leather, there is some light crease to the material, but this does not take away from their comfort. The front two seats appear to be electrically operated too with the driver’s seat even having a memory function, something you find on high-end cars today.

Within the rear of the cabin, the bench seat is in great condition only showing some signs of its age. If you are going on a long trip with any rear passengers then you will be happy to hear that there is a rear entertainment system fitted from the factory, with two DVD players set into the headrest. These DVD players turn on and should work well with a DVD of your choice.

As we get to the back of the car and into the boot section, we find an optional 3rd row of seats that can be bolted in to increase the seating capacity. It is clear that seats have rarely been used as they don’t show their age at all. Within the boot, we also find the spare wheel, as the LPG tank now occupies the spare wheel void.

There are a few areas within the interior that could do with a little tart-up. The main issue is the sagging headliner, this is common for a Solihull product and as such there are many kits that you can order online to sort it out.

One other small detail that you may want to tidy up is the centre console area, there has been a modern double-din stereo system that has been fitted with the addition of reversing camera this has been installed well but above it, where the air suspension controls would have once sat there is a void. You can probably find a blanking plate to fit within this void, so it is not a huge issue.

Overall, the interior condition of this P38 is good, with some great features like the DVD players and electrically operated leather seats, it will only take a little bit of time and effort to bring her back to her former glory with some new headlining material.

The Exterior

 • Reversing camera fitted
 • Tow bar fitted
 • Striking and domineering road presence
The P38 Range Rover is such an iconic-looking vehicle, it may have a big box-like design, but it still remains elegant in stature.

This P38 is presented in good exterior condition, with the majority of the bodywork in really good condition there are a few spots to keep your eye on as the years' progress.

If there is one colour that suits a Range Rover it is Epsom Green, this car is finished in that colour, and it looks great in all lights. To complement the deep green paintwork the silver alloys are presented in really good condition too, with only one centre cap missing they look great.

As you might expect from an older car, there are a few areas that you may want to keep your eye on. Most notably an area of bubbling just behind the driver's wing mirror, and also some slight signs of corrosion on the lower seam of the split tailgate.

Overall, for a 22-year-old car with nearly 200,000 miles its exterior condition is actually rather good, it has been looked after properly throughout its life.

The Mechanics

 • LPG system fitted
 • Engine overhaul recently completed
 • Spring conversion fitted
When it launched in 1994 the P38 came with three engines, a 4.0L or 4.6L Rover V8 or a 2.5L BMW inline-six. It would seem that the first owner of this car knew which engine to have, fitted with the bigger 4.6L ‘Thor’ V8 it is now a comfortable cruiser with bags of torque on tap.

The 4-speed automatic is also a lovely gearbox to live with, a smooth change between the gears and a capable cruiser when the torque converter locks up at around 55 mph.

In 2004 the car was converted to run on LPG, this modification is now more relevant than ever with petrol prices reaching new record highs an LPG-enabled car may once again be the way forward.

On the day of the photos, the car started and idled nicely, selecting first and reverse gears without any worrying sounds from the gearbox it appears to be in good mechanical condition.

A couple more points that should be mentioned include the air to coil spring suspension and a major engine overhaul recently.

Both of these jobs should prolong the life of this high mileage hero.

Summary

Who doesn’t love the idea of cruising around in a V8 brute for the price of a used Hyundai?

The level of luxury that a P38 provides is second to none within its price point, and with a huge and welcoming Land/Range Rover community you will never be at a loss with what to do with yourself at the weekend.

When you have been through and worked on a few of the small snags around the car you will have one excellent P38 that will become part of the family.

About Max Bids

The max bid process allows you to bid without any hassle.

Enter your maximum bid and we will then bid on your behalf to ensure you're the highest bidder - just enough to keep you in the lead and only up until your maximum.

Anti-sniping

Car & Classic prevent auction snipers from bidding in the last seconds to win an auction.

Auctions are extended by 3 minutes if anyone bids within the last 2 minutes to allow other bidders to react and counter-bid.

Auto-bidding increments

  • If your maximum bid is equal to or below the reserve price, your maximum bid will be applied in full if you are the highest bidder.
  • If you are the highest bidder and place a maximum bid above the reserve, we will automatically put in the reserve as your first bid.
    • Once the reserve has been met, Car & Classic will make sure you are the highest bidder using only the bidding increments stated below.
    • We will keep you in the lead up until your maximum bid OR the increment closest to your maximum bid, providing your maximum bid is enough to cover the increment value.

Bid Amount Increment
£0 to £9,999 £100.00
£10,000 to £49,999 £250.00
£50,000 to £99,999 £500.00
£100,000 + £1,000.00

Automatically outbid immediately

When you place a max bid and are outbid immediately that means that another bidder has placed a max bid limit which is higher than yours.

You can bid again and we will use our automatic bid system to try and get you as the highest bidder.

Matching max bids

When there are two max bids of the same value, the one placed first remains the lead bidder.

Pre-authorisation

We may hold a pre-authorisation charge on your card until the end of the auction when the hold will be cancelled. If you win, we'll take a security deposit which counts towards the payment for the vehicle and isn't any extra cost to you.

What are pre-bids?

A pre-bid means you're able to place a bid before the official start of the auction.
You will be notified whether or not you are the highest bidder when the auction starts.

Problem with your bid

Bids are contractually binding. To help protect you, we have some rules in place if we think it's been mistyped. Please check and amend what you have entered.
