  • Not often seen cabriolet body shape Golf
  • Completed project in great condition
  • Recently replaced cam belt

The Appeal

The Cabriolet body shape may not be something we immediately think of when mentioning the Golf, but it certainly is an iconic model. And for those in search of a top-down driving experience without the impracticality of a roadster, surely this is a best of both worlds scenario.

The current owner bought this 2001 example as their first car giving it a spruce up from the electric windows to the soft-top roof. Now moving on to something more recent, the car is ready to give its next owner a sense of freedom.

History and Paperwork

  • First registered 2001
  • Bought by current owner at auction in December 2021
  • Plenty of work carried out
  • Cam belt replaced at 71,000 miles
  • Dry stored under current ownership
  • Just 85,500 miles in total
  • Original vehicle wallet and owner manuals included
  • MOT until April 2023

The Interior

  • Good overall condition
  • Fully functioning roof mechanism
  • Top-down driving at its best

Originally bought with a non-functioning driver-side electric window and roof mechanism, the current owner carried out work to fix both issues. The car’s electronics are now in fully functioning state, with an additional aftermarket radio implementing USB connectivity linked to a 6-disc changer.

Elsewhere, the black and blue two-tone seats are in seemingly good shape with just a small tear in the driver’s seat to mention. The rest of the fabric throughout the interior from the carpets to the door cards also look in great condition.

A few signs of wear can be seen on places such as the gear knob and door handles, though surprisingly, the steering wheel is in particularly good nick, as are the buttons on the centre console.

The boot also looks well kept and, as one would expect, holds the spare wheel and toolkit.

With the top down, or up, the cabin of this 2001 Golf is very good looking and is surely a nice place to be on any trip.

The Exterior

  • Great VW Golf cabrio styling
  • Overall, very good condition

Certainly, when one thinks of a VW Golf, the first thing that springs to mind is far from an elegant cabriolet. Though, this car certainly breaks the mould set for the long-standing model, especially for its Mk4 iteration.

That being said, this 2001 example looks the part and is surely an excellent model for the young petrol head looking for a fun car in which to have a first taste of freedom. Furthermore, finished in this lovely dark blue colour, the model looks fantastic.

A few scuff marks, notably on the passenger side door adorn the model while the wheels also have varying degrees of marks. Overall, though, the car is in good condition having been well preserved by the current owner.

The soft top roof also seems to be healthy keeping its shape very well while, as previously mentioned, the mechanism operating it has been overhauled in the past 12 months.

The Mechanics

  • ‘Fairly pokey’ despite modest engine
  • Recently replaced cam belt

Under the bonnet, the engine bay looks healthy enough and has plenty of potential to shine with a bit of TLC.

Whether it’s sat in the most beautiful engine bay or covered in leaves, the small, 2-litre inline four won’t be fussed. Known for great reliability, this Mk4 Golf is surely ready for plenty of miles ahead. Even more so thanks to a replaced cam belt just 14,000 miles ago.

Despite its size, the engine has plenty of go, the vendor describing it as ‘fairly pokey.’ And with a soundtrack supposedly identical to when it left the factory, it clearly has been cared for properly throughout its life.

Summary

Bought as a first car, this quirky Golf Cabrio has served its current owner well and is ready to do the same for its next. With open-top driving available in a reliable and safe hatch back, it seems there’s nothing this car can’t do.

And with plenty of work gone into the car in recent months, it is ready to give its next owner a great time on the open road.

About Max Bids

The max bid process allows you to bid without any hassle.

Enter your maximum bid and we will then bid on your behalf to ensure you're the highest bidder - just enough to keep you in the lead and only up until your maximum.

Anti-sniping

Car & Classic prevent auction snipers from bidding in the last seconds to win an auction.

Auctions are extended by 3 minutes if anyone bids within the last 2 minutes to allow other bidders to react and counter-bid.

Auto-bidding increments

  • If your maximum bid is equal to or below the reserve price, your maximum bid will be applied in full if you are the highest bidder.
  • If you are the highest bidder and place a maximum bid above the reserve, we will automatically put in the reserve as your first bid.
    • Once the reserve has been met, Car & Classic will make sure you are the highest bidder using only the bidding increments stated below.
    • We will keep you in the lead up until your maximum bid OR the increment closest to your maximum bid, providing your maximum bid is enough to cover the increment value.

Bid Amount Increment
£0 to £9,999 £100.00
£10,000 to £49,999 £250.00
£50,000 to £99,999 £500.00
£100,000 + £1,000.00

Automatically outbid immediately

When you place a max bid and are outbid immediately that means that another bidder has placed a max bid limit which is higher than yours.

You can bid again and we will use our automatic bid system to try and get you as the highest bidder.

Matching max bids

When there are two max bids of the same value, the one placed first remains the lead bidder.

Pre-authorisation

We may hold a pre-authorisation charge on your card until the end of the auction when the hold will be cancelled. If you win, we'll take a security deposit which counts towards the payment for the vehicle and isn't any extra cost to you.

What are pre-bids?

A pre-bid means you're able to place a bid before the official start of the auction.
You will be notified whether or not you are the highest bidder when the auction starts.

Problem with your bid

Bids are contractually binding. To help protect you, we have some rules in place if we think it's been mistyped. Please check and amend what you have entered.
