The Background

The Land Rover has been around since 1948, with what is now known as the Series I. It was designed with farm and light industrial use in mind, with a steel box-section chassis and an aluminum body. After the production of the Series I was such a success, the Series II and Series IIA were both equally as popular, and were then followed by the Series III.

It was in 1983 that Land Rover introduced the Defender, which was known as the Land Rover 110, due to the 110 inch length of its wheelbase. Taking the big move from the traditional leaf spring set-up, Land Rover gave the Defender coil springs to offer a more comfortable ride, and the addition of power steering, which was a welcomed improvement. There were also changes to the interior with improved seats, instruments and switchgear.

The History

The seller of this 2002 Land Rover Defender 110 County is just the second keeper of the classic 4 x 4. He purchased it directly from Land Rover in 2005, after they had finished using it as a demonstration vehicle. As you would imagine from Land Rover, it is a fully serviced vehicle which the seller has kept up through his ownership.

The seller has carried out some small modifications to improve comfort and safety, such as the bullbar with the additional spotlights, obviously improving vision at night, and the seats have been replaced for some Cobra items which offer more support and comfort together with being
fully adjustable, and with the bulk head removed this enables them go go back further.

You can also see from the previous MOT history that the seller has not been using the Land Rover in recent years, covering as little as 30 miles a year, and this is what has brought on the decision to part with the vehicle.

The Paperwork

The V5 is present and shows 1 previous keeper for the Defender. There are 2 keys present along with the owners handbooks and stamped service booklet.

There is an extensive amount of receipts and invoices which have been saved, showing everything which has been spent and purchased for the 110.

An MOT is present which is valid until the 2nd December 2022. There were some advisories showing the brakes slightly binding. The seller has since had this rectified with new calipers and pads to the front and unseized the rear brakes.

The Interior

Inside, as mentioned, the replacement Cobra seats are in very nice condition with just a small amount of bobbling to the material on the driver’s side bolster. With the Defender being an ex-demonstrator, it was treated to carpet which is in nice condition and shows no signs of excessive wear. Looking under the carpet, as you can see in the photographs, the floor is in very good condition, and the same can be said for the headlining which is also nice and clean, with no sagging.

The dashboard looks to be in good order, with no splits or cracks. The instruments are reported to be working as they should, with the odometer displaying a reading of 88,048 miles. The switchgear to the centre of the dashboard shows no signs of wear to the buttons, with all the images clearly displayed.

There is the standard factory fit Land Rover radio cassette present and working, and another extra is the addition of central locking, which does sometimes stick on the driver’s side every now and again. There are also electric windows, which are working as they should.

Into the rear, and this has had the upper section of the bulkhead removed leaving just the strengthener piece in the lower section. It has also been ply-lined to the sides and floor, with a ply-line bulkhead included should you want to fit it.

The Exterior

The paintwork on the Defender 110 is believed to be Chawton White, which is reported to be all original. There are a few small age related corrosion marks around the rivets on the aluminium panels, which is often found on and Land Rover of this age and originality. Starting at the front, the bull bar, as mentioned, is an additional fitment by the seller which holds the Maxtel spotlights, and these are in good condition with no cracks, as are the headlights and indicators.

There have been brushed stainless steel headlight surrounds fitted which are in good order. Moving up, the bonnet aligns as it should and has been fitted with aluminum chequer plate to match the wing tops. The windscreen rubber has started to perish a little but this is a readily available item, should you wish to replace it, and the screen has no noticeable scratches to mention.

Around to the sides, and again, the panel gaps look to be equal. There have been aluminium chequer plate sills fitted to match the wings and bonnet. Looking down the sides the Defender is nice and straight with no dings that we could see.

To the rear there are no splits to be seen in the light lenses, and the door aligns as it should. The spare alloy wheel is mounted to the door with a unused tyre fitted, and the lower section of the chassis has again been covered with chequer plate. Most of the visible bolts around the defender have been replaced with stainless steel items where possible.

The alloy wheels are all in good condition with no signs of corrosion to the faces, and the BF Goodrich All Terrain tyres are matching and new.

The Mechanics

The 2.5 litre turbo diesel fires up nicely with no smoke on start up. The engine is reported to sound as it should, with no untoward noises creeping in. The gear change is also reported by the seller to be smooth, with the defender pulling well through all of the gears.

Land Rover also treated this Defender to ABS and traction control, which is said to be working correctly.

Looking at the underside, there is some very slight surface corrosion on some of the components, but the vehicle has never been treated with anything other than what it left the factory with, so it is clear to see that it is hiding nothing. Another important point to mention is that there are no oil leaks that we could see from anywhere, engine, gearbox or diff casings.

The Appeal

What more could you ask for than 1 previous keeper who was Land Rover themselves, and who had used this 2002 Defender 110 County as an Ex-demonstrator for 3 years before the current seller purchased it directly from them. Some nice options were fitted at the factory such as the ABS, Electric windows, Central locking and carpet. The seats have been replaced by the seller for more comfortable Cobra items.

It comes with a full service history and MOT until December 2022, and has recently had new front brake calipers, pads and tyres all around. This Defender is ready and waiting for you!

About Max Bids

The max bid process allows you to bid without any hassle.

Enter your maximum bid and we will then bid on your behalf to ensure you're the highest bidder - just enough to keep you in the lead and only up until your maximum.

Anti-sniping

Car & Classic prevent auction snipers from bidding in the last seconds to win an auction.

Auctions are extended by 3 minutes if anyone bids within the last 2 minutes to allow other bidders to react and counter-bid.

Auto-bidding increments

  • If your maximum bid is equal to or below the reserve price, your maximum bid will be applied in full if you are the highest bidder.
  • If you are the highest bidder and place a maximum bid above the reserve, we will automatically put in the reserve as your first bid.
    • Once the reserve has been met, Car & Classic will make sure you are the highest bidder using only the bidding increments stated below.
    • We will keep you in the lead up until your maximum bid OR the increment closest to your maximum bid, providing your maximum bid is enough to cover the increment value.

Bid Amount Increment
£0 to £9,999 £100.00
£10,000 to £49,999 £250.00
£50,000 to £99,999 £500.00
£100,000 + £1,000.00

Automatically outbid immediately

When you place a max bid and are outbid immediately that means that another bidder has placed a max bid limit which is higher than yours.

You can bid again and we will use our automatic bid system to try and get you as the highest bidder.

Matching max bids

When there are two max bids of the same value, the one placed first remains the lead bidder.

Pre-authorisation

We may hold a pre-authorisation charge on your card until the end of the auction when the hold will be cancelled. If you win, we'll take a security deposit which counts towards the payment for the vehicle and isn't any extra cost to you.

What are pre-bids?

A pre-bid means you're able to place a bid before the official start of the auction.
You will be notified whether or not you are the highest bidder when the auction starts.

Problem with your bid

Bids are contractually binding. To help protect you, we have some rules in place if we think it's been mistyped. Please check and amend what you have entered.
