The Background

Introduced as Mercedes-Benz’ ‘entry level’ class of luxurious coupés and convertibles, the CLK-Class of cars replaced the E class of the time, yet were based on the architecture of the C-Class. The first iteration of the CLK was replaced by the second-generation cars in 2002 (for the 2003 model year) which is the generation that this particular car belongs to, being one of the early (52-plate) cars of the second generation.
This update saw the CLK in all its forms ship with an impressive list of standard equipment, which had become the norm for Mercedes-Benz. ABS, stability control, dual-zone climate control, electrically powered drivers seat with memory and alloy wheels all featured as standard, while a number of engineering upgrades also benefitted this new generation of CLKs. While mostly hidden to the casual observer, these upgrades significantly improved the driving characteristics of the CLK, including the upgrade to rack-and-pinion steering, while the use of three-link front and multi-link rear suspension improved the ride quality compared to previous models.

The History

This particular example of the CLK 200 Kompressor Coupé is one of the first from the second generation, being a 52-plate car. Benefitting from all the aforementioned generational upgrades and an impressive standard specification, this car also benefits from an impressive array of optional extras.
These options include a number of comfort-focused features, making this CLK a fantastic cruising machine for long-distance drives. A full Amaretta Nappa leather interior, sports suspension, wood finish burr walnut trim, heated windscreen washers, electric folding mirrors, electrically adjustable steering column, multi-function steering wheel, and a Harmon Kardon Logic 7 surround sound system with Bose speakers sound system are among the highlights for this well-specced CLK.
Being an ‘Elegance’ trim model also affords this example green-tinted glass and a grey front grille, while this particular car has a set of 17” alloys fitted from the factory that were an optional extra, which look fantastic against the elegant lines of the CLK Coupé.

The Paperwork

With the first owner having custodianship of the car for an impressive 13.5 years, the history file that accompanies this car is nothing short of incredible. With a plethora of original handbooks, servicing history and other record on-hand, you can rest assured that the history of this particular CLK is very well-documented throughout.

Under its current ownership, the vehicle has undergone a major service by a Mercedes specialist. The vehicle also benefits from 2 new tyres.

The Interior

With cars of this age, usually you’d expect to see plenty of age-related marks, especially around the usual high-traffic areas (seat bolsters, carpet, touch points, etc) but this CLK shows very little signs of its age, with the interior presenting in remarkable condition, the seller noting there are some very minor blemishes on the leather.
With the exception of the expected wear to the driver’s heel pad, the rest of the cream carpets and Mercedes-branded floor mats appear to be very well-cared for indeed with only very minor marks, while the seats show no outward signs of wear or heavy use, along the bolsters being in very good condition indeed. The same is true of the rear seats, which look as if they’ve just left the factory and have barely ever been sat in.
The light-coloured plastics all appear to be free of any major marks, scuffs or damage, with no issues showing themselves in the comprehensive amount of photos that have been seen. The aforementioned walnut trim is also in excellent condition, and retains its deep shine from the factory, adding a touch of colour and contrast to the bright and airy CLK interior. This particular example has been so well cared for, in fact, that even the boot is in great condition.

The Exterior

On the outside, the condition of the bodywork is very impressive indeed overall, and certainly doesn’t show that this CLK is now over 18 years old. The factory metallic paintwork retains its deep gloss finish, set off against the restrained chrome details and trim lines used to accentuate the shape of the CLK.
The 17” alloy wheels are in excellent condition too, with no signs of kerbing, scuffing or other damage on any of the wheels. Describing the condition of the car, the vendor calls it “pristine” and “one of the best examples available” and it’s not hard to see why.

Under its current ownership, the vehicle as also had the parking sensors finished to match the exterior paintwork.

The Mechanics

Much like the rest of the car, under the bonnet, the 1.8l inline-four M271 engine has clearly been cared for, and looks to be in impressive condition, especially considering its age. Mated to a five-speed automatic transmission, the engine will provide silky-smooth cruising power, perfectly suited to a small luxurious car such as the CLK. All the plastics look to be clean and free from any cracks or damage, while there is also no signs of any fluid leaks or misting, with all hoses appearing to be in visually fine condition.
Alongside the visual inspection of the engine, the car also flags up ‘no malfunction’ on the drivers’ display, while the seller remarks that the car drives “excellently” likely due to the extensive service history of the vehicle, backed up by the previously mentioned in-depth paperwork.

The Appeal

From the impressive specification to the fantastic overall condition and low milage, it is clear that this CLK has been the pride-and-joy of all those who have owned it. Now, it is time for a new custodian, and whether you plan on making the most of the condition as a classy everyday driver or putting it away in anticipation of the CLK achieving ‘modern classic’ status, this is surely one of the best examples of the CLK 200 Kompressor on the market today.

About Max Bids

The max bid process allows you to bid without any hassle.

Enter your maximum bid and we will then bid on your behalf to ensure you're the highest bidder - just enough to keep you in the lead and only up until your maximum.

Anti-sniping

Car & Classic prevent auction snipers from bidding in the last seconds to win an auction.

Auctions are extended by 3 minutes if anyone bids within the last 2 minutes to allow other bidders to react and counter-bid.

Auto-bidding increments

  • If your maximum bid is equal to or below the reserve price, your maximum bid will be applied in full if you are the highest bidder.
  • If you are the highest bidder and place a maximum bid above the reserve, we will automatically put in the reserve as your first bid.
    • Once the reserve has been met, Car & Classic will make sure you are the highest bidder using only the bidding increments stated below.
    • We will keep you in the lead up until your maximum bid OR the increment closest to your maximum bid, providing your maximum bid is enough to cover the increment value.

Bid Amount Increment
£0 to £9,999 £100.00
£10,000 to £49,999 £250.00
£50,000 to £99,999 £500.00
£100,000 + £1,000.00

Automatically outbid immediately

When you place a max bid and are outbid immediately that means that another bidder has placed a max bid limit which is higher than yours.

You can bid again and we will use our automatic bid system to try and get you as the highest bidder.

Matching max bids

When there are two max bids of the same value, the one placed first remains the lead bidder.

Pre-authorisation

We may hold a pre-authorisation charge on your card until the end of the auction when the hold will be cancelled. If you win, we'll take a security deposit which counts towards the payment for the vehicle and isn't any extra cost to you.

What are pre-bids?

A pre-bid means you're able to place a bid before the official start of the auction.
You will be notified whether or not you are the highest bidder when the auction starts.

Problem with your bid

Bids are contractually binding. To help protect you, we have some rules in place if we think it's been mistyped. Please check and amend what you have entered.
