The appeal
Born from military hardware before becoming a byword for luxury, the G-Wagen has established itself as the ultra-robust SUV of choice for discerning buyers, combining a wealth of comfort equipment with truly exceptional off-road ability.
Built in only 828 examples, the G400 CDI pairs the famed Geländewagen all-terrain architecture with a 4.0-litre twin-turbo diesel V8.
This 2002 example was delivered new in Spain, where it remained for its first thirteen years before being imported to the UK in 2015. Its previous owner kept it for almost ten years, using it mainly for long-distance trips between the UK and Switzerland. Its current owner, meanwhile, has invested in thorough maintenance and extensive detailing work over the last six months.
Its maintenance record is particularly comprehensive. The service book—stamped from day one—includes numerous visits carried out within the Mercedes-Benz dealer network, while the history file is bolstered by invoices covering several years. Key work carried out includes the preventative replacement of the timing chain and its tensioner kit in 2016, along with a service of the gearbox and transfer case, replacement of the crankshaft position sensor, and refurbishment of the EGR system completed in mid-2026.
Finished in an elegant Tanzanite Blue Metallic with a black leather interior, this G400 CDI is offered with an MOT valid until January 2027. It’s an exceptionally well-maintained example, ready to be enjoyed on the road.
The seller adds:
“The service history suggests this G400 CDI has been used for what it was made to do: covering long motorway miles rather than short town trips. During its first thirteen years it stayed in Spain before being imported to the UK, and then the previous owner primarily used it for regular runs between the UK and Switzerland. As a result, the vast majority of its documented 101,000 miles were covered under favourable conditions.
The vehicle behaves exactly as a properly maintained G400 CDI should. Since the recent transmission service, the five-speed automatic gearbox shifts with remarkable smoothness while also offering crisp, decisive changes. The twin-turbo diesel V8 delivers readily available power and notably generous torque. The permanent four-wheel drive gives the solidity, peace of mind, and the capability that made the G-Class W463 such a benchmark for off-road vehicles.
As the videos accompanying the listing show, the engine starts instantly from cold, quickly stabilises its idle, and delivers the deep, distinctive sound of a diesel V8—what sets the G400 CDI apart from the more conventional diesel SUVs of its era.
Under the bonnet, the engine bay is remarkably clean, with no visible corrosion on the front crossmember or the inner wings. The underside is just as impressive, retaining excellent original condition. Aside from the light surface patina you’d expect on some suspension components, no structural corrosion is visible. Combined with a recent Dinitrol anti-corrosion treatment and a history of faultless MOT tests with no advisories, this is clear evidence of how well this example has been preserved.”
