The Appeal
Launched in 2002, the R230 generation of Mercedes SL brought the glamorous and desirable Mercedes SL into the new Millennium. Borrowing the Vario-Roof technology from the baby SLK model, the R230’s folding metal hard top roof finally offered an SL that could genuinely be used all year round.
Tasteful and elegant styling was fused to a range of engines, including the mighty 5.0 V8 SL500 example on offer here. 302BHP in an exceptionally luxurious and well-appointed interior was combined with Mercedes’ remarkable adaptive suspension. Superb road holding and handling with limousine ride quality.
This particular early example is classically finished in the popular Mercedes colour of silver with a dark blue leather interior. It carries a usefully long MOT valid to January 2027. Mercedes SL’s always become representative automotive icons of their era, and now perhaps represent the most affordable point in time for acquiring an example of the magnificent R230 generation SL.
