The Background
The Mercedes SL is the second longest serving model under the marque following closely behind the G Wagen. That should give you some indication as to how popular the SL is and for how long it’s been considered one of the best in its field.
This particular generation of SL, the R230, started production in 2001 and went on all the way to 2011. Like its predecessors, It is regarded as a class act from Mercedes and with a V8 on board, one of the top models to have.
The interior is finished in grey which does compliment the outside being silver and leaves it looking very classy. The figure hugging sports seats are a combination of smooth leather and perforated leather and have minimal wear, they are also heated. The centre arm rest has a minor dimple in the leather.
The car also benefits from a Parrot Bluetooth handsfree and aux input.
The multi media display does flicker from time to time and may need some attention.IMG_9911.jpg1.41 MB
The Exterior
The exterior of this SL500 is stunning in silver and really does have a presence on the road. The bodywork in general is in fantastic condition with only a few minor stone chips and blemishes such as one on the driver’s side corner of the rear bumper. The folding roof operates as it should and the car really does look great roof up or down.
The wheels have recently been refurbished and look stunning and the tyres have plenty of life.
Being a Premium Mercedes the car has Bi-xenon headlamps which are automatic and Auto wipers.
The only minor fault is that the NSR window can be slow to go down sometimes.
To avoid any confusion , the SL600 V12 badging on the rear of the car was fitted by the previous owner and is not the model of the vehicle, it is an SL500 V8. In addition, the Private Registration does not come with the vehicle.IMG_9931.jpg3.51 MB
The Mechanics
The car benefits from a full service history and as such has been well maintained.
Recently the car has had brake discs and pads, front and rear. Suspension bushes replaced and both batteries are new. Common weaknesses on this model are the ABS SBC and the roof motor/pump both of which have had money spent.
The auto box changes up and down as anticipated and the V8 sounds lovely when you hit the loud pedal.
As I mentioned in the brief model background the SL is one of Mercedes longest running models and with technology having increased over the years so has the performance of these sports convertibles.
Sure they receive heavy bracing underneath due to not having a permanent roof but with the 5.0 Litre V8 putting 382 BHP to the rear wheels through the 5 Speed automatic gearbox your sure to have a smile on your face if you show it some twisties.
It is by no means a restrained lunatic however and can be as civilised as one would like so if wafting the b roads, roof down, on a sunny Sunday to find a country pub for lunch is your thing it will equally handle that too.
Why should you buy this one? If your in the market for a car of this ilk with a proper engine and the right history , I think the question you should be asking yourself is more, why shouldn’t you buy it…
