The P38A Range Rover is the second-generation Range Rover launched in 1994, 24 years after the introduction of the Range Rover Classic.
It included an updated version of the Rover V8 engine and offered more equipment and premium trims, positioning the vehicle above the Land Rover Discovery to face the increased competition in the SUV marketplace.
Outside of Land Rover, it is usually known as the P38 (or P38a), after the office building in which the vehicle development team was based. During the early development stages, the vehicle was known by the project designations of 'Pegasus' and 'Discovery,' changing to P38a when the engineering team moved to Block 38A at Solihull.
The name 'Discovery' was used temporarily as a cover to confuse journalists while the original Discovery vehicle was being developed.
The second generation Range Rover adopted an improved electronic air suspension (EAS) which was an adaption of the system used on the 1993 - 1996 Range Rover Classic. It allows automatic, speed-determined ride-height adjustment. The five suspension heights offered by EAS are ‘Access, ‘Motorway’, ‘Standard’, ‘Off-Road’ and ‘Off-Road Extended. Height was also adjustable manually between the first four settings.
YE02 OPV received its first registration in May, 2002 and was one of the very last P38 models to come off the Solihull assembly line. In the absence of a V5C, the number of former keepers is indeterminable. A quick DVLA check advised that the car is currently SORNed and its previous MoT, which was performed at 91,973 miles – and passed, expired on 24th September, 2021.

The car comes with an extensive range of original Range Rover booklets, including the Owner’s Manual and the all-important Service Record, which contains a full history of Land Rover main-dealer service stamps, the last of which was recorded in January, 2020 when it received a ‘C’ Service and brake fluid change at 88,306 miles (see Image #1). Since then, the car has been driven 6,444 miles.
Not in the Service Book is an additional service carried out on 25th September, 2020 (see Image #2).
There is also a comprehensive file of routine service and maintenance records, some of which are pictured in the gallery below. Important aspects include a replacement windscreen in 2015 and a replacement o/side front wing in 2017.
Commensurate with the age and mileage of the vehicle, there are signs of wear (but no evidential tears) to the leather seats which is understandable when considering the vehicle’s mileage of 93,000. The door cards, carpets and headlining appear in good condition.
All the electrics – and there are many on this upper-end Vogue SE variant – are said to be in working order, including the switchgear, instruments and front seat settings. The veneer trim inserts shine nicely throughout and show none of the usual age-related varnish peel or sun bleach.
On balance, the interior presents in reasonable condition, but all the leather work could benefit from a detailed cleansing and healthy rejuvenation, along with the beige plastic trims. There is a small abrasion to the under right side of the handbrake, likely caused by the driver’s jewellery over time.
Outside, the original Epsom Green paint finish looks to be in good condition and presents very well, considering the car’s enjoyed mileage and age of almost 20 years.
The handsome alloys present well and appear scuff-free. They are shod with a set of Delinte DH7 all-season tyres. Both the front and rear light lenses are clear and show no hint of the sun-bleached fogging usually associated with a car of this age.
A cursory glance down each flank of the car reveals no evidence of damage at any time in its 19 years and even the front valance – for all its vulnerability – remains blemish free.
As intimated above, the all-important Service Record contains a full history of Land Rover main-dealer service stamps up to January, 2020, plus the most recent service in September last year.
The expansive array of supporting service and maintenance paperwork coupled with the good overall condition, may well attest to the equally sound mechanical condition of this middle-aged Rangie.
This P38 also benefits from the retrofitted LPG system. The vendor advises that it runs very well however, can be decommissioned should the new owner wish.
If there is any car that can genuinely be said to be in a class of its own, it is the Range Rover with its combination of on- and particularly off-round ability and high-end luxury.
The many remaining P38A Range Rover examples appear to be almost exclusively lovingly cared-for and there is a wealth of information and technical support available at the UK BMW Owners Club website, the members of which are as knowledgeable and enthusiastic as they come.
There is little doubt that YE02 OPV will be a worthy and enduring addition to any new home willing to keep it in the manner to which it has evidently become accustomed over the past two decades.
