THE BACKGROUND
Introduced in 2002, the Ferrari 575M Maranello – or Type F133 – was a classy two-door grand tourer based on the 550 Maranello, but with a smart nip and tuck courtesy of Pininfarina.
It was introduced at the 2002 Paris Motor Show for the 2003 model year and was a two-seater, unlike the 2+2 configuration offered by some of its rivals: Ferrari’s logic being that the vast majority of owners never used rear seats when provided anyway.
Just over 2,000 575Ms were made between 2002 and 2006, of which around 350 were right-hand-drive.
This is a 2003 example and is both unusual and desirable because of its Nurburgring Silver colour scheme – a change from the more common Ferrari red._MG_1458.jpeg3.37 MB
THE HISTORY
Supplied new to a company owner in Wootton Bassett, Wilts, the 575M was used by a managing director for the first three years of its life before passing into private ownership.
It is currently with its sixth owner, but all of them have looked after it diligently, as backed up by the comprehensive history that comes with it.
The current owner bought the car in 2020 and has owned it for just over a year, having purchased it primarily because he’d always promised himself a Ferrari. He has a huge car collection, though, and no longer has a need for the Ferrari, preferring to dedicate his time and attention to the older vehicles in his care. _MG_1498.jpeg5.84 MB
THE PAPERWORK
The history for this car is beautifully presented, with the original handbook, service book, dealer directory, audio guide and sat nav documents supplied in the original tan-coloured Ferrari wallet, in which you’ll also find a Ferrari-branded torch.
The service book is stamped all the way up to 24,464 miles in August 2020, with a receipt for over £2,000 backing up that last visit to the specialists. The cambelts were last done at 19,664 miles, but may need replacing based on age sooner rather than later.
There’s a substantial pile of bills and paperwork in an A4 slip folder to accompany the Ferrari wallet, which shows several large bills in recent years along with relatively recent new tyres.
This is a magnificent looking car in absolutely wonderful condition. Finding fault with it is quite difficult, which is hardly surprising given that it has averaged less than 2,000 miles per year throughout its life.
There are no dents, scrapes or scratches, and no evidence of any previous accident damage, nor of any corrosion. The wheels are in superb condition, as are the tyres, and the Nurburgring Silver paint has a deep shine and is free of any noticeable scuffs or scratches. _MG_1451.jpeg2.98 MB
THE INTERIOR
Settle into the cabin and the 575M feels pretty special, with its sporting dials and gearshift paddles directly ahead, and that iconic prancing horse taking centre stage in the middle of a three-spoke Momo steering wheel.
The beautiful Navy blue leather is accompanied by equal Navy blue carpets, with everything else in-between in exceptional order. The leather is excellent with barely any sign of wear – even the side bolsters are excellent.
Everything works as it should, including the air conditioning and the Becker Traffic Pro sat nav and stereo, while the car’s commission number on the steering wheel cowl reminds you that you’re aboard something pretty special.
In the boot, the original toolkit is not only still in its tan leather wallet, but also still wrapped inside its plastic wrapper. The Ferrari first aid kit is also still present. _MG_1474.jpeg3.39 MB
THE MECHANICS
Mechanical improvements on the 575M over the 550 included bigger brake discs, a larger and more powerful engine, improved weight distribution, refined aerodynamics and an adaptive suspension set-up. The 5,748cc powerplant develops an incredible 515bhp, enough to give it a 0-60 time of 4.2 seconds and a top speed of 202mph. In other words, it’s a seriously quick car.
Two six-speed transmissions were available, a conventional manual gearbox and, for the first time on a Ferrari V12, Magneti Marelli's "F1" automated manual gearbox – and that’s what you’ll find on this example. It has a two-pedal set up, with a simple finger-operated lever in the centre console to switch it between forward and reverse ratios, and the gears swapped by using the column-mounted “flappy paddles”. It’s actually the quicker of the two transmissions and is desirable as a result.
Another noteworthy point is that this lovely example is fitted with the desirable 'Sports Pack' option, which includes numerous upgrades including but not limited to: the suspension, brakes and the fitment of split rim alloys.
The vendor reports that the car drivers are absolutely spot-on, with blistering performance and excellent handling, while he also says that the steering, suspension and brakes are all in impressive order and have been maintained in accordance with expectations. _MG_1505.jpeg6.13 MB
THE APPEAL
The Ferrari 575M Maranello is a car with huge investment potential, as it was one of the most sensational cars of the early to mid-2000s – an era that is surely going to undergo a similar type of boom the to the 1990s in terms of classic car popularity in the non-too-distant future. And it is most certainly one of the most distinctive and most revered cars of that time.
In terms of condition, mileage and provenance this one is already up there with the very best, and its appeal among Ferrari fans is already immense.
It’s a great example of one of the best GT's ever made – and that gives it monumental appeal both now and in the future.
