The Background

BMW’s 3 Series line is something we can always depend upon in the modern world. It’s like Starbucks or Amazon – you may or may not like such things, but they’re always there and always will be. Indeed, the 3 Series has become a stalwart element of the street furniture of any country you care to name, with a continuous thread running from the present day right back to the launch of the E21 in 1975. The 3er is the standard by which all other cars in the compact-executive sector are measured.

The E46 generation, as we see here, was very much the 3er for the new millennium. Debuting in 1997 (with production running to 2006), this model was 70% more rigid than the E36 that preceded it, and markedly more advanced under the skin, with its aluminium suspension components and CANbus microcontrollers. The design focus was on a fusion of aerodynamics and aggressive stance, and there was a wide range of variants available: two-door coupes, four-door saloons, five-door ‘Touring’ estates and, of course, two-door cabriolets.

There was a huge variety of powertrains too, from the lowly small-capacity petrols and frugal diesels, up to the hysterical hair-on-fire M3. But for many, the sweet spot was the 330i; available in all body styles, it fused a lusty 225bhp 3.0-litre straight-six and a nimble and agile chassis with relatively sober looks – a stealth missile when it needed to be, and also a practical, friendly and amenable everyday cruiser. That’s the car we have here today: powerful, comfortable, well-equipped, smooth… it’s every 3 Series you could ever want, wrapped up in one neat package.

The History

Low owners, low mileage and proper service history are the three core pillars of a reassuring used car purchase, and this 330Ci sits comfortably within the centre of that Venn diagram.

With just three former keepers and a comprehensive file of history, it’s got a gentle 67k on the clock and it’s all in fine fettle. The current owner bought it in October 2015; having owned a number of BMWs before he was keen to have another, with a 3.0-litre engine and cabriolet body style being the key criteria. It’s proven itself to be a thoroughly reliable and enjoyable companion over the years, requiring only routine servicing and one replacement coil pack.

The reason for selling now? Quite simply that it’s been replaced – the owner had always fancied a Jaguar XK8, and now he’s taken the plunge and bought one, it’s time to wave farewell to the faithful and dependable 330Ci.

The Paperwork

There’s a reassuringly large amount of paperwork with this car.

The V5 is present, showing it to have been first registered on May 15th 2004; the car was previously on a cherished registration, but this has now been taken off and the new V5 is correct. All of the original books and manuals are here, including the stamped service book, in their BMW wallet.

There’s a sizeable sheaf of receipts and invoices from throughout the BMW’s life, showing all of the servicing, MOTs and remedial work, the most recent being for a new battery, and a replacement set of wheels which were refurbished and shod with new tyres. There’s also the original bill of sale, with Vines Gatwick selling the car new in 2004 for a total of £38,204.60.

Helpfully, we also find a sheet listing all of the original spec options, showing that this 330Ci was specced with the body-colour hard-top, 6-CD changer, M-Sport II option, heated sports seats, M leather multi-function steering wheel, parking sensors, rain sensors, headlight washers, and BMW Business head unit among much else.

The Interior

The ergonomics of the E46 are what keep owners engaged and enamoured; everything’s very well thought out, with well-positioned controls and quality materials. It’s all weathered the years very well here too; aside from a little wear to the side bolster on the driver’s seat, the leather is all in lovely condition.

The front seats tilt forward correctly (with the headrests electrically lowering themselves when you pull the tilt lever), allowing access to a rear bench that looks to have hardly been used. The carpets and door cards are good, and the interior plastics are generally unmarked save for the general wear-and-tear you’d expect. All of the gauges are working, with no warning lights illuminated on the dash, and every button and switch is doing what it’s supposed to do.

Inside the boot it’s all extremely tidy with nice clean carpets. The original toolkit inside the boot lid is present and correct with no pieces missing, and underneath the boot floor we find a space-saver spare sitting in a dry cubby.

The Exterior

Titan Silver suits this body shape very well, and the 330Ci’s bodywork is generally in superb condition. The only blemishes of note are a very minor ding on the passenger-side rear quarter (where a careless shopper ran a trolley into it), and a minor scuff on one front bumper corner – but these would both be extremely easy for a professional to remedy.

The front splitter is also a little scuffed on the underside, as is the case with essentially every 330Ci in existence, as it’s naturally quite low-slung. Other than those extremely minor points, however, it’s all good news – we find no other scuffs, scratches, dents or dings, and the body panels all sit straight and true. The correct trim and badges are in place, and the light lenses and window glass are in good order.

The soft-top is in outstanding condition inside and out, and the electric raising and lowering system works perfectly on the button, sealing nice and tight. The hard-top is also excellent; it’s a spot-on colour-match to the body (which isn’t always a given, as these things often get stored inside and thus fade at a different rate), and all of its fixings work just as they should to attach and detach it. Naturally it’s a two-person job to fit and remove it, but it’s easy as pie.

The only point of note here is that the fixing points could perhaps use a little adjustment on the driver’s side, as when the hard-top is fitted the driver’s-side rear quarter window doesn’t fully raise into position, leaving a slight gap. (It raises fine with the soft-top up and seals tightly, so it’s an issue with the hard-top fitment rather than the window itself.) The owner is looking to address this, so hopefully it will be fixed before sale.

The eagle-eyed will have spotted that this car isn’t wearing the more usual 18” alloy wheels, but rather a set of BMW 17” rims. The owner felt that the larger wheels with their low-profile tyres were adversely affecting the ride somewhat, so in the quest for comfort he sourced these seventeens back in 2019, sending them for a professional refurb and powder-coating at The Wheel Specialist in Chessington, and fitting them with some fresh Goodyear Eagle F1s with chunkier sidewalls.

The car hasn’t covered very many miles since (due to lockdowns, mainly), so the tyres still have plenty of tread. One of the rear wheels has some kerbing to the rim, but otherwise they’re all in superb condition.

The Mechanicals

It’s a very robust mechanical package in this car, with the M54 straight-six serving up a meaty 225bhp and 221lb.ft with a silky-smoothness combined with a genuine urgency when required.

This low-mileage car has always been correctly serviced and maintained, and as such the motor is an absolute peach; it fires instantly, idles evenly, and pulls keenly through the revs. The automatic transmission is an equally smooth affair, and operates in just as slick a manner as you’d hope.

What’s really noticeable about this 330Ci is how solid it feels when you’re driving around – there are no knocks or rattles, no looseness or untoward noises… it’s testament to its low miles and history of care that it feels like a much younger car. There are no issues to report with the steering, suspension or brakes, everything is as it should be. This isn’t a car that’s immediately going to present you with a to-do list – it’s a genuine cherished example that’s ready to be enjoyed.

The Appeal

The E46 330Ci really is remarkable value these days. With the reserve set at this auction, you’d really struggle to find other cars at the same price point of a similar age, quality, level of equipment and power.

There’s a lot to love about the model, from its smooth and willing drivetrain to the superbly laid-out and equipped interior. And this particular car is very attractive indeed: low owners, low miles, and an excellent history, and all of that combined with a comprehensively ticked spec list – you’ve got the factory hard-top, the heated sport seats, the M Sport trim, it’s the complete package.
