The Background

March 5th 1996, and at the Geneva Motor Show, Jaguar launched Project X100, otherwise now more commonly known as the Jaguar XK8 and brought with it brand new standards to the luxury car market. The XK8 was available as either a coupe or convertible. Sales expectations were exceeded by far, and the XK8 became the fastest selling sports car in Jaguar’s history. An introductory price of £47,950 for the coupe and £56,850 for the convertible, the models went on sale to the general public in October 1996. Jaguar’s V8 engine was the new 4.0 litre which produced an impressive 290 Bhp and 290 ft-lb. No manual transmission was available in the Jaguar XK8. Instead it was fitted with an all new 5-speed electronic automatic transmission, featuring normal and sport modes. The sporty XK8 was limited to 250 km/h.
It was in 2005 that Jaguar launched the 4.2 S  at the Geneva Motor Show. This was to be the final run of the XK which was based on the original 1996 design. The 4.2 had a new colour range, leather edged floor mats, revised bonnet badge, red brake calipers and polished door sill protectors. The car was 10mm lower than standard and, with uprated dampers and anti-roll bars, ensured a more sporty feel when behind the wheel. The electronic limiter was also removed enabling the car to reach a top speed of 174 mph.

The History

This lovely Jaguar XK8 first hit the roads on 29th September 2005. Since then it has only covered a very low 31,123 miles and just over 10,000 of those have been from 2011 to present day, so the 4.2 litre is just about run in. The history file is quite extensive, with invoices going into the thousands around the year 2010, it makes for some interesting reading on what's actually been replaced on the Jag.
The current seller has owned this car since 16 December 2015, and, with getting very little use, it’s been decided that now is the time to part with the lovely V8.

The Paperwork

The V5 is present and shows 6 previous keepers. The XK8 comes complete with two keys. Also present are the owner’s manual, satellite navigation instructions and service book, which has a total of 8 stamps in.
Other paperwork includes quite a few invoices for parts and work carried out on the car coming into the thousands if you dare to add them together.
There is an MOT valid until the 6th April 2022. There were some advisories on the MOT which are basically the tyres are legal, but really need to be replaced

The Interior

This Jaguar is the 4.2 S model and so, being the last model in the production run, it came with a few nice little touches to finish it off. Open the door and you are faced with the lovely black leather seats finished with white stitching to highlight the interior. Ther seats are in very good condition, with no wear to the drivers or passenger bolsters. There is some slight stretching of the leather to the drivers seat squab, but this is completely normal on any car with leather trim.
The door cards are in excellent condition and the electric window and mirror switches are working fine.
Sitting in the driver’s seat is a nice place to be! The steering wheel shows no signs of wear. The instruments are all scratch free and with no warning lights, the odometer is showing a reading of 31,123. Giving a more sporty feel over the walnut trim, the XK8 has a carbon trim finish to the dash facia and centre console. This is all in excellent condition with no obvious scratches that we could see. The centre of the dash houses the satellite navigation system which is working, although we are not sure how up to date the maps are. Just below are the heating controls, which are working as they should with no wear to the buttons, followed by the original Jaguar radio cassette. The speakers around the Jaguar are Alpine and so give off a nice quality sound. The roof button is on the centre console which operates the roof as it should, and the gear stick and surround have no real signs of wear to them.
Into the back and, yes, the seats are in excellent condition and would hold two small children, but adults would be a bit of a squeeze. The boot area is nice and clean. To the right is the Jaguar 6 disc CD change with the navigation system brain sitting above it. Also in the boot is the wind deflector for when the roof is down. The tonneau cover is missing, it may turn up before the auction ends but until then we should assume it's missing.

The Exterior

This 2005 Jaguar XK8 4.2S is finished in the lovely Copper Black Metallic which is limited to the S model. There is no evidence of the Jaguar ever receiving any paint that we could see, and the finish is excellent thanks to a recent paint detail which has removed some of the swirl marks so easily collected over the years, especially on black.
Starting at the front. Unsurprisingly with such low mileage, the car doesn't really have many stone chips. The bonnet aligns up as it should with the nose and the wings. The grille has been replaced with a Convex Mesh Grille, one supplied and fitted by Elite & Performance Jags. In place is the white ringed Jaguar badge which is one of the things that denotes it as an S model.
Moving around to the side of the XK8 you can easily see those curved panels are nice and straight with no car park injuries, and the panel gaps are equal and true. The hood is in excellent condition. It does open and close fully.
Onto the rear, and the boot lid opens and closes as it should at the touch of a button from the key fob, or inside the car. Again, like the rest of the car, the panel gaps are equal and uniform, and the bumper has no scuffs and the lights are free from any cracks.
The wheels do have a few light kerb scuffs and there is some corrosion around the Jaguar center caps. All the tyres do have good tread.

The Mechanics

The XK8 S is fitted with the 4.2 litre, 32 valve Jaguar AJ33 engine which produces 294bhp at 6,000rpm with 303 lb-ft at 4,100rpm. The Jaguar fires into life perfectly and the silky smooth V8 purrs away as it should, slightly louder than normal as the car has had a ½ Larni stainless steel exhaust system fitted, with quad tail pipes which brings a fantastic addition to the soundtrack of the V8. Visually, the engine bay is in a nice and tidy condition with no evidence of any leaks that we could see.
The V8 pulls the Jaguar through the 5-speed electronic automatic transmission with ease and changes gear as it should. The seller reports there are no unwanted noises from either the transmission or the engine. The suspension side of things has been upgraded to a set of uprated springs which make the car sit 30mm lower to the ground for a pleasing ride, and also helps with the stance of the XK8. Even with the uprated springs, the Jaguar still cruises along just as any grand tourer should do, soaking up any bumps in the road so as not to disturb the comfortable ride you would come to expect from such a high end manufacturer.

The Appeal

Have you ever fancied a grand tourer? This could be the one! Easily a car that can be driven daily and barely run in at just 31,123 miles. Whether you’re cruising up and down the country with the top down, or nipping to the shops, the XK8 has it all with that perfect V8 soundtrack. If that’s not enough, there's always the sport mode to try!
For a car that cost in excess of £60,000, and prices have been seen to be on the rise, now is the right time to grab yourself a V8 grand tourer.

About Max Bids

The max bid process allows you to bid without any hassle.

Enter your maximum bid and we will then bid on your behalf to ensure you're the highest bidder - just enough to keep you in the lead and only up until your maximum.

Anti-sniping

Car & Classic prevent auction snipers from bidding in the last seconds to win an auction.

Auctions are extended by 3 minutes if anyone bids within the last 2 minutes to allow other bidders to react and counter-bid.

Auto-bidding increments

  • If your maximum bid is equal to or below the reserve price, your maximum bid will be applied in full if you are the highest bidder.
  • If you are the highest bidder and place a maximum bid above the reserve, we will automatically put in the reserve as your first bid.
    • Once the reserve has been met, Car & Classic will make sure you are the highest bidder using only the bidding increments stated below.
    • We will keep you in the lead up until your maximum bid OR the increment closest to your maximum bid, providing your maximum bid is enough to cover the increment value.

Bid Amount Increment
£0 to £9,999 £100.00
£10,000 to £49,999 £250.00
£50,000 to £99,999 £500.00
£100,000 + £1,000.00

Automatically outbid immediately

When you place a max bid and are outbid immediately that means that another bidder has placed a max bid limit which is higher than yours.

You can bid again and we will use our automatic bid system to try and get you as the highest bidder.

Matching max bids

When there are two max bids of the same value, the one placed first remains the lead bidder.

Pre-authorisation

We may hold a pre-authorisation charge on your card until the end of the auction when the hold will be cancelled. If you win, we'll take a security deposit which counts towards the payment for the vehicle and isn't any extra cost to you.

What are pre-bids?

A pre-bid means you're able to place a bid before the official start of the auction.
You will be notified whether or not you are the highest bidder when the auction starts.

Problem with your bid

Bids are contractually binding. To help protect you, we have some rules in place if we think it's been mistyped. Please check and amend what you have entered.
