The Appeal

The CLS wasn’t a new idea; that accolade goes to the original Rover P5B Coupe, but it certainly perfected it. A svelte saloon with sleek fastback style, it proved hugely influential and a popular alternative to the executive saloons that, overnight, suddenly looked very boxy.

This CLS500 is fitted with the firm’s torquey 300bhp 5L V8 plus a long-legged 7spd 7G-TRONIC automatic. Finished in attractive Tanzanite Blue metallic with light beige leather, it is one of the smartest and certainly best-maintained we’ve seen in a long while. The colour scheme is complemented by a high factory specification, including adaptive cruise, electric roof, heated and ventilated memory seats, and a power boot.

The history file is genuinely impressive. We are told the car was supplied new by well-regarded Mercedes specialist Colin Ferns, and the history file includes a printout of all subsequent work by the firm. It totals over £20,000 and includes regular servicing. Since 2023, the car has been serviced by Mercedes Beaconsfield in 2025, with a further service in 2026. Between 2025 and 2026, Mercedes-Benz Beaconsfield carried out over £2,000 of work. Recent work has included new ignition coils, four tyres, and a cosmetic valet.

This is a well-sorted CLS 500 that appears ready for its next keeper to enjoy.

“The car was originally supplied by the renowned independent specialist Colin Ferns Mercedes in Richmond, London, and has been regularly serviced there throughout its life. It actually has quite an interesting history: a few years ago, while the car was at Colin Ferns undergoing a major service and extensive mechanical work, the owner at the time unexpectedly received an inheritance and decided to purchase a Bentley instead. As a result, once all the work was completed, Colin Ferns sold the car on his behalf. The subsequent owner kept it for a year or two as a weekend pleasure car before deciding to move on.

“Crucially, during that previous ownership, the SBC pump was replaced, along with a wheel speed sensors. Since taking ownership, I have continued to heavily invest in the car's mechanical health. I have recently carried out a major service, fitted four brand-new tyres, and replaced both the engine ignition coils and the brake light switch. Alongside the mechanical repairs, I have also spent a considerable amount of time carefully cleaning and restoring both the interior and exterior to bring it up to a wonderful standard.

“I purchased the CLS in February of this year as it has always been one of my dream cars, and I have genuinely enjoyed every moment of driving it. However, the realities of running a large 5.0-litre V8 as a daily driver in London have proven difficult. More importantly, I am not currently in a financial position where I can comfortably afford the general running costs and risks associated with owning a modern classic. It is a truly fantastic, well-sorted car, and I would much rather see it go to an enthusiast who can continue to look after it properly.”

“The Kaschmirbeige interior is in great condition with no rips or major tears. Because it is a light-coloured cabin, the steering wheel and gear knob exhibit some slight age-related fading, which could easily be restored with a standard leather touch-up kit. There are also a few minor, barely noticeable marks on the headliner. Finally, the plastic cover for the headrest adjustment switch is broken, though the underlying switch functions normally. The replacement part is included with the car and is ready to be installed.

“I have deliberately refrained from swapping the head unit for an aftermarket screen, as I wanted to preserve the car's beautiful, original factory aesthetic. The radio, CD player, and CD changer all work flawlessly. The factory Linguatronic voice-command system also works exactly as it should—though it operates with 2005 charm rather than the intelligence of a modern Siri or Alexa! The only minor point is that the Sat/Nav is currently missing its navigation disc. I have already purchased the updated 2017 map disc, which will be included in the sale for the next owner to install.

“Adding to the luxury specification, the car features the premium 4-zone climate control system, allowing individual temperature adjustments for both front and rear passengers. The system works perfectly, and the air conditioning has been recently re-gassed to ensure it blows ice-cold.

“Mechanically, the car is in excellent order throughout with zero leaks. With the M113 engine —known for its long-term durability—the engine runs smoothly and shifts seamlessly through all gears. It is comfortable on cruise, but switching to Sport mode unleashes all the power and performance. The Distronic cruise control works great as well as the brakes operate perfectly, and the AC is ice-cold.”
