Highlights

  • One of only 3,025 made
  • Very low-mileage – only 27,000 miles from new
  • Four owners from new
  • Very well-preserved leather interior

The Appeal

We tend to associate the grand tour with 18th-century nobility, but grand-touring is very much alive and well today; it’s just done differently. Instead of travelling in a stagecoach over the course of several weeks, we can do it in a GT and get around much quicker. GT cars combine performance and luxury in one neat package to give the most refined motoring experience possible, and that’s exactly what you want if you’re heading off on a driving holiday through Alpine passes or around the Italian lakes.
Since the 1950s, few car makers have perfected the art of building grand tourers quite like Ferrari. Historically, the purpose of going on grand tours was to discover the very best culture that Europe had to offer and to gain an education and appreciation for the finer things in life, so a Ferrari seems like the most appropriate mode of transport. After all, what could be finer things are there than the 612 Scaglietti?
Made from 2004 to 2010, the 612 Scaglietti was built on a slightly larger platform than its predecessor, the 456, to give the rear-seat passengers much more room. It was also only the second Ferrari to utilize innovative all-aluminium construction. It has always been an extremely exclusive car, with only 3025 ever made, almost all of which were automatics. Upholstered with the best-quality hide and powered by a puissant 5.7-litre V12 which lets it accelerate from 0-60mph in four seconds and onward to 199mph, there is surely no better way to travel.
This example presents very well, have only been lightly used over the course of its life while being regularly serviced by H. R. Owen. Still sporting its original paintwork and upholstery and in lovely condition throughout, this must be the perfect car for the refined motorist who really means to travel in comfort and style.

The History and Paperwork

  • Originally sold through Lancaster Colchester to Romford-based steel magnate and supercar collector Glenn Tamplin, now best-known as the former owner and manager of Billericay Town F.C. and Romford F.C.
  • Purchased by the fourth and present owner in September 2022 but offered for sale due to lack of use
  • Offered for sale with the current V5, the full set of original owner’s manuals and literature, recent MoT certificates and some recent invoices for maintenance

The Interior

  • Extremely well-preserved and original, with leather maturing nicely
  • Very luxurious specification
  • Retains its original toolkit and car cover
Inside, this 612 offers everything you could possible hope for in a touring car. Generously trimmed with sumptuous tan leather, we can’t think of a more pleasant environment in which to travel. It’s all in excellent condition, too. The leather is just beginning to mellow with age and is all the better for it, but it could still almost pass for brand-new.
With such light use, the whole interior has lasted extremely well. It is possible that you might find one or two blemishes if you went over it with a magnifying glass, but we took a very close look and didn’t find anything that we could criticize.
The upholstery includes matching tan headlining and complementary black carpets, both of which are also in extremely good condition. The facia is a combination of dark leather and carbon fibre, and again is free from blemishes as far as we are able to see. The rear seats, centre console and door trim all deserve the highest praise.
It may be trimmed with some of the best leather known to the motor industry, but that’s only half the appeal. In addition to all the usual luxuries such as powerful air-conditioning, a radio-CD player and power windows, the Ferrari also includes fully-adjustable power seats, a folding rear-seat armrest and various concealed cubby-holes, which is surely everything you could want when you’re touring over long distances.
The boot opens to reveal a very clean luggage space, complete with the original leather-bound toolkit, Ferrari car cover and tyre repair kit.

The Exterior

  • Still wears its original Nero (Black) paint
  • 19-inch alloy wheels
  • Appears very clean underneath
Considering this Ferrari is still wearing its original 17-year-old paint, it presents very nicely indeed. Obviously, one has to allow for the fact that it has been used on the road during that time and so has picked up a few small chips and scrapes, which are only to be expected, but you’d probably not notice them unless you were looking for them. Aside from one scuff on the nearside of the front bumper, all such blemishes are extremely small. There are a few small areas of bubbling underneath the paint at the top of the passenger door but these, again, are too small to notice unless you’re actively trying to spot them.
The 612 benefits from a very clean, smooth profile and is not adorned with much in the way of trim, but that which is present, such as the various Ferrari badges, is all in excellent condition, and all the glass parts are in superb order.
The 19-inch alloy wheels have been kept nice and clean and still look very smart. As with most 17-year-old cars, the rims do show some light scuffs and the nearside front wheel has a few slightly deeper blemishes on the spokes, but they still look very good for their age.
Indeed, it must be said that the whole car looks great for its age. The glossy black paint is still deep and rich, and the low, lithe, bullet-like profile does not look dated, even though the design is now 20 years old. It’s the sort of car that will generate lots of admiring glances – we can say that much with confidence.

The Mechanics

  • Regularly serviced and maintained
  • MoT with no advisories until September
  • Extensive work completed during 2021
As far as we can tell, this 612 is in wonderful mechanical health. It starts on the button and pulls away smoothly and obligingly, with the V12 really singing when the throttle is blipped. According to the MoT certificate issued in October 2022, the brakes, steering, suspension and so on are all in good condition and working just as they ought to. Since the car has only covered 26,849 miles from new, and only 2,000 miles since October 2015, it isn’t so surprising to find it in such good health with so little wear.
The service record shows that it received its annual service from H. R. Owen every year between 2009 and 2019, so it has never been neglected. A collection of invoices from H. R. Owen from 2021 details the fitment of various new parts, including many general service parts as well as new bonnet struts and a new wiper motor. Other work completed by Owen in 2021 included fitment of new left- and right-hand front rose joints, replacement of the rear brake pads and discs, and servicing of the air-conditioning system.

The Summary

The Ferrari 612 Scaglietti was undoubtedly one of the best, if not the best, grand-touring cars of its generation, but even as it approaches 20 years old, it looks and feels very modern. It’s hard to think of a better car for Sunday drives and Continental holidays, so if you really want to make the most of your summer you should consider keeping a car like this in your stable.
Why not place a bid or two on this one? It’s in lovely cosmetic condition and mechanically it’s superb. With a couple of weeks off work, the winding road and this fine machine, you’ve got a recipe for the best summer holiday ever.

About Max Bids

The max bid process allows you to bid without any hassle.

Enter your maximum bid and we will then bid on your behalf to ensure you're the highest bidder - just enough to keep you in the lead and only up until your maximum.

Anti-sniping

Car & Classic prevent auction snipers from bidding in the last seconds to win an auction.

Auctions are extended by 3 minutes if anyone bids within the last 2 minutes to allow other bidders to react and counter-bid.

Auto-bidding increments

  • If your maximum bid is equal to or below the reserve price, your maximum bid will be applied in full if you are the highest bidder.
  • If you are the highest bidder and place a maximum bid above the reserve, we will automatically put in the reserve as your first bid.
    • Once the reserve has been met, Car & Classic will make sure you are the highest bidder using only the bidding increments stated below.
    • We will keep you in the lead up until your maximum bid OR the increment closest to your maximum bid, providing your maximum bid is enough to cover the increment value.

Bid Amount Increment
£0 to £9,999 £100.00
£10,000 to £49,999 £250.00
£50,000 to £99,999 £500.00
£100,000 + £1,000.00

Automatically outbid immediately

When you place a max bid and are outbid immediately that means that another bidder has placed a max bid limit which is higher than yours.

You can bid again and we will use our automatic bid system to try and get you as the highest bidder.

Matching max bids

When there are two max bids of the same value, the one placed first remains the lead bidder.

Pre-authorisation

We may hold a pre-authorisation charge on your card until the end of the auction when the hold will be cancelled. If you win, we'll take a security deposit which counts towards the payment for the vehicle and isn't any extra cost to you.

What are pre-bids?

A pre-bid means you're able to place a bid before the official start of the auction.
You will be notified whether or not you are the highest bidder when the auction starts.

Problem with your bid

Bids are contractually binding. To help protect you, we have some rules in place if we think it's been mistyped. Please check and amend what you have entered.
