THE BACKGROUND

If there’s one thing that Mercedes-Benz do really well it’s to design really classy coupes and convertibles. Its saloons, estates and SUVs are pretty good too, but there’s something about the company’s ability to take a relatively humble saloon as a basis and then add some seriously sexy bodywork that just results in brilliant and stylish cars. And the C209 generation of CLK is a brilliant example of that, blending tried and tested mechanicals with some very pretty styling.
The C209 was the second generation of CLK and was launched in 2002 and facelifted in 2005 so this 2007 example we have here represents the most modern-looking of this era of CLK. Its pillarless design makes it looks far smarter than the C-Class saloon on which it based and it presents as a far classier model. With a rear-wheel drive chassis it has entertaining handling but where the CLK really scores is with an excellent ride quality which makes it an ideal machine for soaking up the miles.
Despite being a two-door model it’s still very practical with comfortable rear seats and a decently-sized boot, too. The CLK 220CDI Avantgarde we have here offers an excellent blend of performance and economy all wrapped up in a practical and stylish package. A future classic? We think so.

THE HISTORY

First registered in October 2007 this CLK has had just two owners since then, the first from 2007 to 2010 and the second from 2010 to 2021 during which time its covered just 79,000 miles. The owner reports that he’s looked after it very carefully since 2010 and that it drives superbly.

THE PAPERWORK

The CLK comes with a good service history with nine stamps in the service book from Mercedes-Benz in Exeter with its most recent service being at a specialist less than 100 miles ago. The online MoT history documents the car’s mileage and it has an MoT until June 2022.

THE INTERIOR

The interior of this CLK looks great with the black leather interior with pressed alloy accents contrasting very well with the Brilliant Silver paintwork. It was equipped with several options when new including orthopaedic seats and an automatic transmission with the steering wheel-mounted paddle shift.
The black leather seats are in fine order with no unsightly damage or staining to them and the carpet and floor mats are in similarly good order. The headlining is clean and looks fresh and tidy.
The black dash trim and door trim panels are in good condition, as are the instruments and switchgear. All in all it’s a very nicely appointed interior which has plenty of creature comforts to help you while away the miles. The air conditioning still blows cold and items such as the electric windows and the central locking all work as they should.

THE EXTERIOR

The classy ambiance of this Mercedes is continued outside where the bodywork looks to be in excellent condition with a deep shine to the Brilliant Silver paintwork. There are no unsightly blemishes such as parking scuffs to the bumpers to spoil the look with only the odd stone chip showing it’s been used as its maker intended.
The CLK’s lights all look to be in fine fettle and the chrome strips on the bumpers and the side trims are all present and correct. All the door shuts look to be clean and in decent condition. The CLK sits on a set of recently refurbished 18-inch alloy wheels and the tyres have good tread depths.

THE MECHANICS

This CLK has obviously been looked after well – the under bonnet area looking almost as clean as the car’s exterior. The paint is in fine condition and all the black plastic components appear to be in good order.
The owner reports that the CLK is a delight to drive and the combination of the lusty four-cylinder turbodiesel engine and the automatic transmission is a good one, offering a great blend of economy and performance.

THE APPEAL

There’s nothing quite as classy and robust as a Mercedes coupe and this CLK demonstrates that, looking very suave and stylish but packing a reliable and economical set of mechanical components that should make it a cost effective proposition to run.
The seller states that this is one of the nicest examples of the CLK that he’s seen for a long time and that it drives very nicely indeed. With just two owners from new, below average mileage and a great service history it is a superb example of what will surely be a desirable modern classic.

About Max Bids

The max bid process allows you to bid without any hassle.

Enter your maximum bid and we will then bid on your behalf to ensure you're the highest bidder - just enough to keep you in the lead and only up until your maximum.

Anti-sniping

Car & Classic prevent auction snipers from bidding in the last seconds to win an auction.

Auctions are extended by 3 minutes if anyone bids within the last 2 minutes to allow other bidders to react and counter-bid.

Auto-bidding increments

  • If your maximum bid is equal to or below the reserve price, your maximum bid will be applied in full if you are the highest bidder.
  • If you are the highest bidder and place a maximum bid above the reserve, we will automatically put in the reserve as your first bid.
    • Once the reserve has been met, Car & Classic will make sure you are the highest bidder using only the bidding increments stated below.
    • We will keep you in the lead up until your maximum bid OR the increment closest to your maximum bid, providing your maximum bid is enough to cover the increment value.

Bid Amount Increment
£0 to £9,999 £100.00
£10,000 to £49,999 £250.00
£50,000 to £99,999 £500.00
£100,000 + £1,000.00

Automatically outbid immediately

When you place a max bid and are outbid immediately that means that another bidder has placed a max bid limit which is higher than yours.

You can bid again and we will use our automatic bid system to try and get you as the highest bidder.

Matching max bids

When there are two max bids of the same value, the one placed first remains the lead bidder.

Pre-authorisation

We may hold a pre-authorisation charge on your card until the end of the auction when the hold will be cancelled. If you win, we'll take a security deposit which counts towards the payment for the vehicle and isn't any extra cost to you.

What are pre-bids?

A pre-bid means you're able to place a bid before the official start of the auction.
You will be notified whether or not you are the highest bidder when the auction starts.

Problem with your bid

Bids are contractually binding. To help protect you, we have some rules in place if we think it's been mistyped. Please check and amend what you have entered.
