The Toyota FJ Land Cruiser is to Japan what the utility Land Rover is to the UK – a true off-road icon that is in many ways the definition of the brand.
Introduced in 2006, the FJ Cruiser is a retro-styled tribute to that original. Powered only by a 4.0-litre V6 petrol engine, it was first shown in concept form at the 2003 North American International Auto Show as a styling study, but was so well received that it was authorised for production.

The vendor of the FJ Cruiser bought it new from CMH Toyota in Melrose Arch, Gauteng Province, in 2012. At the time he was living in Johannesburg working for a multi-national company and was on a five-year placement in South Africa. When that came to an end in 2014 he had become so smitten with the FJ and – knowing he couldn’t buy one in the UK – arranged to have it shipped back in a container with the rest of his belongings.
It has every document from new – service and paperwork receipts from South Africa and the UK, all UK customs clearance documents, type approval documents and its original South African registration certificate.
Open up the barn-style side doors and you have instant and easy access to both the front and rear seats. It’s all in good order inside, with chunky, intuitive controls in keeping with the FJ’s utilitarian nature.
The seats are faced in black leather, which is in good order, and the dash and door cards are in good order.

The FJ is in excellent all-round condition with no discernible damage or deterioration. It’s a great think to look at – deeply cool, with chunky Yokohama Geolander tyres, a roof rack and supplementary driving lights adding to its off-road appeal.
With a full service history, it’s no surprise to find that the FJ is in rude mechanical health with no known issues. It starts well and engages all gears as it should in both high and low ratios.
The FJ is a very cool truck indeed and has a cult following in the markets where it was most popular, notably the USA. Right-hand-drive models were rare, though, despite enjoying popularity in Australia and South Africa. This one is a great example with a known history from day one with its original owner, and is a real rarity and object of desire in the UK! It’s a very cool thing.
