The Appeal
If the name DB Replicas is new to you, then a clarification is required: the word ‘replica’ is entirely misleading. Unlike some Cobra evocations, David Brooke’s highly regarded outfit builds cars from scratch using carefully detailed, hand-built aluminium bodies.
Not surprisingly, only a handful of these cars have ever been built. This one was completed in 2017 by David Brooke to a track-orientated specification that runs to several pages. We've provided the details below. In short, its ethos is to evoke Shelby’s hardworking racers rather than be a shiny concours winner. That’s why it features unpainted brushed aluminium and some great details like the Goodyear Eagle digital tyre masks. The eagle-eyed will spot other Cobra ‘Easter Eggs’ in the photos, like the classic ‘reverse rake’ Smiths speedometer as fitted to genuine Cobras. That attention means this car looks almost indistinguishable from the cars driven by Carroll’s begoggled, smutt-faced drivers.
This car, however, is much more than an aesthetic exercise. Beneath the bonnet is an engine that would likely out-run most of those 60s originals. It is a crated Shelby Roush 7.7L ‘468CI’ V8 that has been blueprinted and balanced. That unit alone cost around £25,000. It is mated to a Tremec 5spd manual box. We're covered the rest of the specification below.
With just two former keepers from first build and only 2,071 miles clocked up, this is a fantastic Cobra evolution that is as capable as it is truly evocative.
