Offered today is a fantastic collection of BMW Isetta projects, each in different stages of completion. Arguably one of the most iconic vehicles ever produced, these microcars have an enormous following across the globe, with vast aftermarket support. As the previous auctions on Car & Classic will reflect, these “bubble” cars are highly sought after and return rather impressive figures.
With that in mind, this auction presents a superb opportunity to obtain not just 1 of these legendary microcars, but 3. The benefits of purchasing these vehicles as they currently sit are numerous, although perhaps the most obvious is the potential cost saving in comparison to purchasing a complete vehicle.
Upon completing each of these projects using the shells and parts provided, you’re left with 3 of the most sought-after classics to do as you please.
As the images show, there are a total of 3 shells included with this lot. The shells were imported from South Africa in 2021, and have since been kept in dry storage, awaiting their next owners.
Each of the vehicles has had NOVA duty paid, and each comes with its correct VIN. Each vehicle is of course in different stages of completion, with the blue Isetta being the most complete.
Shell 1
This Blue Isetta shows off a previously resprayed shell, along with early stages of underside components installed. The exterior appears to be in very good condition, albeit showing a few minor defects and packaging from transport.
Should you wish to complete a build one at a time, this Isetta would be the best place to start, seemingly only requiring drivetrain components, an interior, electrics, and the remaining suspension parts. uT75UHjQYwyWhsCkuv282l7qhSxeB8f9Ascdzp52.jpeg1.71 MB
Shell 2
In terms of completion, the pictured red shell is the 2nd most complete, having seemingly been stripped down in the past and resprayed. That being said, it would seem a fair amount of time has passed since this little bubble car received its fresh coat.
Subsequently, there are more visible defects to note on this shell when compared to the red car. Although rather minimal, these consist of discolouration to the white roof, marking from the protective packaging on the pillars, and various minor imperfections to the paintwork.
That being said, these imperfections are rather minimal, and certainly don’t detract from what appears to be quite a healthy base.
Rather evidently, this Isetta will require noticeably more work than the other two, due to the condition of the shell. It would appear that a previous keeper has made attempts to strip the shell down to the bare metal, and a great deal of time has since passed.
As such, it would appear quite likely that this will pose the greatest challenge in terms of bodywork and effort. That being said, the vehicle’s previous salt-free home in South Africa may result in a shell that requires very little in the way of welding or structural repair.
Rather deceptively, it could be argued that this actually presents a much more blank canvas than the other two. You’re left with complete creative freedom for the exterior condition, without the worry of stripping previous restoration efforts.
For example, if you’re simply after a very unique Isetta for your own use, why not use this opportunity to start a rat-rod look or something equally adventurous?
As pictured, there is a tremendous amount of parts included with the 3 vehicles. It would appear as though additional parts would need to be sourced to complete all 3 vehicles in their entirety, although plenty of components are provided here.
The provided parts include wheels, headlight surrounds, panels, a steering wheel, shocks, handbrake assemblies, bumper trims, a fuel tank, suspension components, steering components, brake components, trim pieces, engine parts, gearboxes, drivetrain components, and more.
