NO RESERVE - 1931 Singer Junior Saloon

Highlights

  • Original condition
  • 848cc overhead cam engine
  • A high-end prewar light car

The Appeal

This Singer Junior is offered for sale in original condition. It is a running, driving example of the ‘oily rag’ philosophy, whereby originality is prized over shiny restoration. A car in this condition just oozes charm and character. It has thousands of stories to tell and looks all the better for being used and preserved.
The Junior was Singer’s smallest model offered in the late ‘20s and early ‘30s, but was a remarkably capable car, being fitted with an overhead cam engine. This little 850cc unit made the Junior a quick little thing, able to outperform its competitors.
With some tender loving car, this Singer would be a great entry for pre-war events,

The History and Paperwork

  • First registered 16th April 1931

The Interior

  • Well-worn leather upholstery
  • Wooden dashboard in great condition
  • Railway carriage style window straps
The interior of this singer is unapologetically well worn, with the seat squabs being particularly cracked. But that’s the charm of this car: you know as soon as you open the door that hundreds of people have gone before you, and that hundreds more will continue to ride in this piece of history for years to come.
Upon entering the cabin, the driver is presented with a reassuringly solid steering wheel, a solid wooden dashboard, with a brass insert upon which the speedometer, oil pressure gauge and ammeter are mounted. The serpentine gearstick is centrally mounted and the handbrake lever is to the driver’s right. There is a pleasing level of patina present everywhere, that warm glow of use which can only be built up over nearly a century.
The windscreen opens to allow the ingress of a pleasant summer’s breeze, while the front windows slide ad the rear windows are raised and lowered by railway carriage style straps. A sliding sunroof completes the ventilation equipment.

The Exterior

  • Four door coachwork
  • Patinated paint
  • Side-mount spare
Finished in a shade of deep burgundy over black wings, the paintwork on this singer is in patinated condition. There are scratches and blemishes and a few small dents, but we believe that these just add to the character of the car.
There is nothing too shiny about this Singer, it requires only the occasional wipe down with an oily rag to preserve its originality. The four-door coachwork makes this a practical light car, which could easily be used for daily errands as well as attending events.

The Mechanics

  • Overhead cam engine
  • Four-speed gearbox
  • Four wheel brakes
An overhead cam engine, four-wheel brakes, semi-elliptic leaf springs front and rear, and four-speed gearbox prove that this car was aimed at the higher end of the market when it was new. The engine bay remains delightfully scruffy, with its thermosyphon cooling system proudly on display, alongside coil ignition and an AutoVac fuel pump.
The cars engine is free and turns over. These singer juniors are very capable cars, with powerful little engines and tight handling. They are popular among light car enthusiasts and can often be seen competing at a wide variety of events.

Summary

Prewar light cars have been undergoing something of a renaissance in recent years. They are now appreciated as remarkable feats of engineering, being both incredibly simple and yet still able to be driven as they were originally intended.
This Singer Junior would be eventually ideally suited to events organised by the Vintage Sports Car Club’s Light Car and Edwardian Section. Or it could be just as enjoyable to use this little prewar car for running errands and pootling around the countryside. This would make for a perfect father and son restoration project.

About Max Bids

The max bid process allows you to bid without any hassle.

Enter your maximum bid and we will then bid on your behalf to ensure you're the highest bidder - just enough to keep you in the lead and only up until your maximum.

Anti-sniping

Car & Classic prevent auction snipers from bidding in the last seconds to win an auction.

Auctions are extended by 3 minutes if anyone bids within the last 2 minutes to allow other bidders to react and counter-bid.

Auto-bidding increments

  • If your maximum bid is equal to or below the reserve price, your maximum bid will be applied in full if you are the highest bidder.
  • If you are the highest bidder and place a maximum bid above the reserve, we will automatically put in the reserve as your first bid.
    • Once the reserve has been met, Car & Classic will make sure you are the highest bidder using only the bidding increments stated below.
    • We will keep you in the lead up until your maximum bid OR the increment closest to your maximum bid, providing your maximum bid is enough to cover the increment value.

Bid Amount Increment
£0 to £9,999 £100.00
£10,000 to £49,999 £250.00
£50,000 to £99,999 £500.00
£100,000 + £1,000.00

Automatically outbid immediately

When you place a max bid and are outbid immediately that means that another bidder has placed a max bid limit which is higher than yours.

You can bid again and we will use our automatic bid system to try and get you as the highest bidder.

Matching max bids

When there are two max bids of the same value, the one placed first remains the lead bidder.

Pre-authorisation

We may hold a pre-authorisation charge on your card until the end of the auction when the hold will be cancelled. If you win, we'll take a security deposit which counts towards the payment for the vehicle and isn't any extra cost to you.

What are pre-bids?

A pre-bid means you're able to place a bid before the official start of the auction.
You will be notified whether or not you are the highest bidder when the auction starts.

Problem with your bid

Bids are contractually binding. To help protect you, we have some rules in place if we think it's been mistyped. Please check and amend what you have entered.
