NO RESERVE - 1958 Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud project

Highlights

  • Good runner
  • Interior requires only a little work
  • Ideal project for someone with bodywork skills

The Appeal

The Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud is a majestic beauty and this example has been on wedding car duties in recent years. Although running well, sadly it is suffering from some bodywork corrosion which needs attention to bring it back to its best.
For someone with the appropriate skills, this is an ideal project to bring it back to life. It reportedly runs well and, with the interior only needing minor attention, it could be back in service before you know it.
So whether you’ve always dreamed of owning a Rolls-Royce but only have the budget for a doer upper or you can rescue the car and would like to see it in countless happy couples’ photos in years to come, then get your bid in now.

The History and Paperwork

  • First registered 3 February 1958
  • Colour change from green and grey to white registered with the DVLA 1998
  • Used as a wedding car over the last 7-8 years
  • Bodywork restoration started but stalled
  • One invoice from 1995
  • Reported to have been serviced in the last 18 months
  • MOT exempt
  • V5 present

The Interior

  • Cream leather
  • Rip to front seat
  • Rear seats intact
The cabin of this Rolls-Royce is finished in cream leather with all the wood trimmings and, while it’s clearly seen better days, it doesn’t look like it’s going to take major efforts to revive it. The front seats show the most wear and there is a tear on the driver’s seat base but otherwise a deep clean and light restoration work to the leather should soon see it in a perfectly usable condition.
The wood trim is patinated in places and may benefit from some efforts to restore its shine but, as is, there’s just a charming patina about it. One thing which will need attention is the driver’s door armrest which is coming adrift but otherwise there’s nothing that should draw any attention from the happy couple’s big day.

The Exterior

  • White paintwork
  • Bodywork requires restoration
  • Presentable chrome
The Silver Cloud is a timelessly elegant design and, even with mismatched paintwork, in our eyes it’s easy to see the car’s potential. As it stands, there are numerous areas of corrosion which will need to be addressed and a start has been made but it is likely to need to be revisited.
The good news is that the chrome looks to be in considerably better shape than the bodywork and that, for anyone concerned about the missing mirror off the driver’s front wing, it can be found in the boot.
The underside is thought to be faring better than the body too but will require detailed inspection to be sure. In all, then, work to be done, but it looks to be eminently rescuable.

The Mechanics

  • 4.9litre straight six
  • Four speed automatic gearbox
  • Recently completed 80 mile journey without a hitch
The one thing that you really need from a wedding car is reliability, lest the hirer incurs the wrath of a disappointed couple. Happily, the seller tells us that the only issue of note here is that the generator light is showing on the dashboard which is likely to require the replacement of a set of bushes.
Otherwise, he reports that it recently completed an 80 mile journey with smooth acceleration and gear changes, excellent brakes and a quiet engine which means that progress was just as unruffled as you would hope. He understands that the car has been serviced within the last 18 months and while, if you’re planning to ferry budding brides, you’ll likely want to get it checked over, the signs are positive.

Summary

A fabulous chance to reinvigorate a majestic classic which would continue to make an ideal wedding car.

About Max Bids

The max bid process allows you to bid without any hassle.

Enter your maximum bid and we will then bid on your behalf to ensure you're the highest bidder - just enough to keep you in the lead and only up until your maximum.

Anti-sniping

Car & Classic prevent auction snipers from bidding in the last seconds to win an auction.

Auctions are extended by 3 minutes if anyone bids within the last 2 minutes to allow other bidders to react and counter-bid.

Auto-bidding increments

  • If your maximum bid is equal to or below the reserve price, your maximum bid will be applied in full if you are the highest bidder.
  • If you are the highest bidder and place a maximum bid above the reserve, we will automatically put in the reserve as your first bid.
    • Once the reserve has been met, Car & Classic will make sure you are the highest bidder using only the bidding increments stated below.
    • We will keep you in the lead up until your maximum bid OR the increment closest to your maximum bid, providing your maximum bid is enough to cover the increment value.

Bid Amount Increment
£0 to £9,999 £100.00
£10,000 to £49,999 £250.00
£50,000 to £99,999 £500.00
£100,000 + £1,000.00

Automatically outbid immediately

When you place a max bid and are outbid immediately that means that another bidder has placed a max bid limit which is higher than yours.

You can bid again and we will use our automatic bid system to try and get you as the highest bidder.

Matching max bids

When there are two max bids of the same value, the one placed first remains the lead bidder.

Pre-authorisation

We may hold a pre-authorisation charge on your card until the end of the auction when the hold will be cancelled. If you win, we'll take a security deposit which counts towards the payment for the vehicle and isn't any extra cost to you.

What are pre-bids?

A pre-bid means you're able to place a bid before the official start of the auction.
You will be notified whether or not you are the highest bidder when the auction starts.

Problem with your bid

Bids are contractually binding. To help protect you, we have some rules in place if we think it's been mistyped. Please check and amend what you have entered.
