The Appeal

MGs always sat comfortably at the top of the ranks when it came to stylish, dynamic sports cars in the 1960s and 70s and none so more than the MG B. The perfect recipe of performance style and value meant the lightweight 2 door soft top was an absolute hit, and to this day remains one of the most popular classic cars of all time.

The MGB GT, took all of these successes and paired them with a marvellous Pininfarina styled sloping fastback design. Lightweight, quick yet economical, and of course elegant Italian styling, what wasn't to like?

This 1966 GT hails from the early days of the model and presents those looking to make their way into ownership at a more attainable level with an opportunity that rarely comes along these days. Presented in barn find condition, this lovely example lends itself excellently to preservation in its current aesthetic “oily rag” state with a general mechanical recomissioning, but is naturally an excellent candidate for a full blown restoration.

The History and Paperwork

First registered 24/06/1966
Just 4 owners including the current keeper
Spent much of its life in the Kent area with one owner
Believed to have come off the road in the early 2000s
After a previous owner passed away, the car was sent to a reclaim centre where the intention was to scrap it, however both the reclaimers and the current owner of the vehicle saw too much potential in it and so it was saved and sold to the current vendor circa 2021
The car has since spent around 2 years with the vendor however time constraints meant they have not been able to revitalise the car as intended and thus they are looking to move it on to a new passionate owner
Tax and MOT exempt due to the vehicle’s historic status
Accompanied by the V5 registration document

The Interior

Largely original interior space which appears to be very complete
Interior is in fair condition and would perhaps benefit from some refurbishment however it is usable in its current state
General signs of patina to be seen within the cabin
Black seating with red piping and matching door panels
Door panels present in good shape
Rear bench seat is not attached but is with the car
Seating does show signs of age and wear
Dashboard appears to be in good shape and lacking in fading and sun damage
Three spoke wood rim steering wheel
Boot floor is clean and solid
Headliner is well presented, still tight fitting and rich in its white colouring
Switchgear, gauge cluster and interior trim pieces are in good shape with an excellent showing of honest patina

The Exterior

Excellent pininfarina styling
A great level of patina across the bodywork, this is a car that would look excellent with the body preserved in its current state
Chrome trim in fair condition, fading and pitting in places, but once again plays into the patina, “oily rag” aesthetic
Desirable and rarer wire wheels all round, with a fifth full size spare
Body panels appear largely solid with concise and consistent panel gaps
Equally good candidate for restoration and repaint if one wishes to take the car in that direction
Excellent parts supply if exterior panels or trim are wanted for a potential restoration
Fuel cap is now in place
The driver's door chrome strip is with the car and can be refitted

The Mechanics

Legendary 1.8 litre B-Series engine
A marvellous blend of performance, reliability and economy
Rarer overdrive car
Would naturally benefit from some mechanical refurbishment, however it does all appear to be complete and in order from a mechanical standpoint
Fitted with new fuel lines
The current owner reports that the starter motor may be faulty, and though it may bump start, no efforts have since been made to start or run it so as not to cause any mechanical damage
Wealth of parts supply and enthusiast support for the engine and driveline in these cars
The air filters have now been refitted to the Carburettors

The MGB GT has always been a popular car, there’s no question about that. Right from its introduction all those decades ago, the little GT has won the hearts of many car enthusiasts and lovers of truly excellent drivers cars.
