Highlights
- At home in town or country
- Timeless dark green paintwork
- All-round capability coupled with good looks
The Appeal
Jeep’s evergreen Cherokee model has been paving the way for the modern SUV since 1974, with its cunning blend of utilitarian practicality, smart looks and well-furnished interior.
The second generation model seen here comes fitted with an imposing four-litre six-cylinder engine and practical four-door bodywork.
Luxuriate in the plush leather interior, with its automatic gearbox for effortless cruising. But look to the left of the gear selector and you’ll see the choice of four wheel drive and low range, showing that this is a car that means business.
With its classical styling, powerful engine and certified off-road capabilities, this Jeep Cherokee has to be a contender for the ideal all-round, do-everything, go-anywhere classic car.
The History and Paperwork
- Sold new in the UK
- Two former keepers
- Although it is two owners it was registered to the seller's brother at the same address and then registered back to the seller (original owner)
- V5C present and correct
- MoT to April 2023
The Interior
- Luxurious leather seats
- Cavernous boot
- Steering wheel professionally refurbished in April 2022
The black leather seats front and rear appear to be well padded yet supportive. They have clearly been used but not abused. The driver’s seat cushion is a little soft on its right hand side, but generally the seats and covers appear to have stood the test of time.
Generally, the interior wears its 150,000 miles well, with the wooden trim on the dashboard and door cappings still looking fresh. The owner tells us that the gauges are working nicely and the switch gear appears to be in good condition with clear, legible decals.
The cavernous load bay is this car’s most practical feature, offering more than enough luggage space for all the passengers. But the headlining above the boot has begun to detach. The vendor also reports that the air conditioning is no longer working although the fan is functional.
In all, the interior of this Cherokee is what makes it a luxury vehicle. And with a little work it could be returned to tip top condition.
The Exterior
- Smart green paintwork
- Recent welding completed
The choice of green paintwork really seems to work well on this Cherokee. It would look equally at home on a windswept Scottish grouse moor or in a leafy London suburb.
There are, of course, a few blemishes which have been picked up over the years. The front bumper has lost some paint on its left corner and there is a slight dent to the rear bumper, on its right side. Overall, the paintwork and body are in very presentable condition.
Good tread remains on the tyres, which sit upon alloy wheels. These could benefit from being refurbished as they are showing signs of oxidation.
Underneath, the car has received attention to its bodywork, with new metal having been welded in. Naturally, there is the usual amount of surface rust for a car of this vintage.
The Mechanics
- Part main dealer history
- Automatic gearbox
- Low range and 4WD
With its powerful six-cylinder engine, this Cherokee was top of the range when new. And any car with a whopping great four litre engine is sure to perform well.
Power is transferred elegantly through an automatic gearbox. But when the going gets tough, you can select four wheel drive, and when it gets even tougher there is a low range option as well.
The vendor states that this Cherokee has been well maintained, with partial service history including at a main dealer.
Summary
Whether you’re mud-plugging your way up a slippery rural track or being seen about town, this Cherokee is ready for anything. It offers smart looks alongside dependable performance.
So don’t miss the chance to get your hands on this example of Jeep’s early take on the now-ubiquitous SUV.
