Highlights

  • Just 2 former keepers
  • Excellent service history
  • Well maintained example
  • Recent timing belt & water pump
  • Long MOT

The Appeal

The Volkswagen Golf has long been an icon of German engineering and tuning culture alike, with the coveted GTI variant being the most desirable of the early golfs. The Mk4 Golf GTI was somewhat of a turning point for the model, having been designed around Volkswagen’s goals to provide a more upmarket, comfortable sporty hatch.
This particular Mk4 is a great showcase of VW’s design, particularly due to the 1.8T powerplant hiding under the bonnet. As enthusiasts know, the 1.8T 20v offers plenty of engaging performance, tuning potential, and if well maintained like this example; reliable fun. This GTI also has the added benefits of just 2 former keepers, plenty of MOT to enjoy, impressive service history, and a well-cared-for Recaro interior.

The History and Paperwork

  • Fitted with a new battery, timing belt, water pump, auxiliary belt, PCV valve, and cam cover gasket in October 2020
  • Fitted with new brake discs and pads in October 2022
  • Includes a collection of previous MOT certificates, a vast array of invoices, and the original Volkswagen booklet pack
  • Includes 2 keys
  • Also includes a Tow Trust removable tow bar
  • Ready to be enjoyed

The Interior

  • Features the original Recaro seats, which are presented in excellent condition, with seemingly only light wear to the driver’s seat
  • Both the carpeting and headlining throughout the vehicle are in great condition for the vehicle’s age, with only minor blemishes to observe
  • Fitted with a single DIN Sony head unit
  • Equipped with a dog guard, and Rezaw-Plast boot liner
  • Overall, the interior of this Mk4 GTI is in great condition, especially for the mileage covered and the age of the vehicle. There are of course minor signs of wear and age to note, such as cracking to the wood burr trim pieces, but certainly, nothing that significantly detracts from the overall form or function.

The Exterior

  • As pictured, the exterior of this GTI does show numerous paintwork imperfections, such as the front wings, minor dents to the bonnet and body, scuffs to the wing mirrors, slight corrosion on the roof & boot, as well as the expected age-related marks.
  • It would also appear that the front bumper has previously been resprayed, and is beginning to show light cracking, as well as the pictured scuffs
  • Fortunately, spares for these vehicles are in great supply, so tracking down replacement wings & a boot shouldn’t prove to be too much of a challenge
  • It should be noted that the windscreen also displays a handful of small chips, although none seemingly significantly affect visibility
  • Whilst suiting the vehicle rather well, the 16” alloy wheels are also beginning to show significant surface corrosion and blemishes. That being said, the wheels come wrapped in a rather welcomed set of Goodyear tyres, with plenty of tread left to enjoy
  • Although there are notable exterior defects, a great deal of these could likely be rectified rather easily without a great deal of hassle. It also deserves to be noted that the vehicle’s interior and mechanical condition is worthy of praise, and may offset the visual blemishes when compared to other examples

The Mechanics

  • 1.8T 20v
  • 5-speed manual gearbox
  • Very well maintained example
  • Last serviced at 138,058 miles, in October 2022
  • Fitted with a new catalytic converter in November 2018
  • Fitted with a new battery, timing belt, water pump, auxiliary belt, PCV valve, and cam cover gasket in October 2020
  • Fitted with new brake discs and pads in October 2022
  • Fitted with a Direnza exhaust, which emits a thoroughly enjoyable yet rather tasteful note
  • Includes a Tow Trust removable tow bar
  • Runs & drives brilliantly, with no known issues
  • Ready to be enjoyed by the next owner

Summary

The Mk4 Golf GTI is popular for plenty of reasons, including its tunability, abundant aftermarket support, reliability, and value for money. Although there are notable visual defects and exterior blemishes, this example offers excellent mechanical health, a long MOT, and a very well-cared-for interior. As such, this would make an excellent base for a light project, a fun daily driver, or an enjoyable weekend toy.

About Max Bids

The max bid process allows you to bid without any hassle.

Enter your maximum bid and we will then bid on your behalf to ensure you're the highest bidder - just enough to keep you in the lead and only up until your maximum.

Anti-sniping

Car & Classic prevent auction snipers from bidding in the last seconds to win an auction.

Auctions are extended by 3 minutes if anyone bids within the last 2 minutes to allow other bidders to react and counter-bid.

Auto-bidding increments

  • If your maximum bid is equal to or below the reserve price, your maximum bid will be applied in full if you are the highest bidder.
  • If you are the highest bidder and place a maximum bid above the reserve, we will automatically put in the reserve as your first bid.
    • Once the reserve has been met, Car & Classic will make sure you are the highest bidder using only the bidding increments stated below.
    • We will keep you in the lead up until your maximum bid OR the increment closest to your maximum bid, providing your maximum bid is enough to cover the increment value.

Bid Amount Increment
£0 to £9,999 £100.00
£10,000 to £49,999 £250.00
£50,000 to £99,999 £500.00
£100,000 + £1,000.00

Automatically outbid immediately

When you place a max bid and are outbid immediately that means that another bidder has placed a max bid limit which is higher than yours.

You can bid again and we will use our automatic bid system to try and get you as the highest bidder.

Matching max bids

When there are two max bids of the same value, the one placed first remains the lead bidder.

Pre-authorisation

We may hold a pre-authorisation charge on your card until the end of the auction when the hold will be cancelled. If you win, we'll take a security deposit which counts towards the payment for the vehicle and isn't any extra cost to you.

What are pre-bids?

A pre-bid means you're able to place a bid before the official start of the auction.
You will be notified whether or not you are the highest bidder when the auction starts.

Problem with your bid

Bids are contractually binding. To help protect you, we have some rules in place if we think it's been mistyped. Please check and amend what you have entered.
