The Range Rover ‘P38a’ is as much of a status symbol today as it was when it was new – opulent, well-equipped and exceptionally grand, it’s a car that has earned a huge enthusiast following in the 27 years since it was launched.
And with prices of Range Rover Classics going skywards, the P38’s moment in the sun is nigh – they’re already creeping up, and it’s not surprising because as well as being one of the most recognisable vehicles of the 1990s, they’re really quite lovely to drive.
This one’s a gorgeous example. A very late model from 2002 – the last year of production - it’s a Vogue SE with the flagship 4.6-litre V8 in discreet Beluga Black, a rarely seen colour on the model. It’s a wonderful, luxurious modern classic that has been looked after all of its life.
THE HISTORY AND PAPERWORK
Cherished registration
Extensive history back to early 2000s
Original book pack
UK V5C
MOT until June 2023
Supplied with the P38 are the original Land Rover book pack wallet, handbooks, a sat nav guide, audio manual and a service book, which is stamped to 100,808 miles in 2010. There then follows a SECOND service book documenting its maintenance thereafter with Land Rover specialists.
The Range Rover has an MOT valid until June 2023, which it passed with no advisory notes. The vendor has owned it for around five years but is selling it to fund the purchase of another Land Rover. It was supplied new by Wessex Land Rover in Portsmouth registered as HY02WKZ but has acquired a cherished plate with one of its previous keepers.
THE INTERIOR
Magnolia leather trim with black piping
Heated, electrically adjustable seats
Sat nav
Climate control and CD changer
Original floormats included
In Vogue SE spec the Range Rover is a genuine luxury vehicle with wonderfully supple leather seats and astonishing levels of standard equipment – electric heated seats, leather-trimmed door cards, a premium Harman Kardon audio system, steering wheel audio and climate control to name but a few.
This one also has a factory sat-nav system, which features both on and off-road settings.
This one’s in great condition and has its original premium floor mats along with a spare set of rubber mats in the boot.
It’s presented in fine order and has recently had a replacement headlining fitted, which is a very common requirement on a P38 and one that the next owner doesn’t need to worry about.
THE EXTERIOR
Excellent black paintwork
Never welded
16-inch alloys
Headlight protectors
Very sound throughout
Finished in the rare colour scheme of Beluga Black, the P38 looks wonderful and is in very smart condition overall with no notable flaws. The inner rear door shuts and lower tailgate are in sound order, which will be good news to any P38 fan, and there is no sign of any rust on the lower tailgate. It has had a couple of minor repairs at some stage, and the paint is slightly out on one rear wheel arch, albeit not immediately noticeable.
The underside looks to be structurally sound and has never been painted, while the original three-spoke alloys are shod with quality Dunlop Grandtrek rubber.
THE MECHANICS
4.6-litre V8
Automatic transmission
Extensively maintained
Fully functional air suspension
High and low ratio gears engage properly
This is the 4.6 V8, which is the flagship P38 engine option with 222bhp and 0-60 in 9.7 seconds. It has covered just 157,000 miles and runs sweetly, with no unusual noises or apparent issues. Indeed, the maintenance record is huge with recent work including both cylinder head gaskets, a full service, replacement coil packs and plugs and an entirely new ECU, all in the last few months. The work was carried out by Black Country 4x4 in Tipton, W Mids, who will be happy to discuss the car with any potential buyer.
The air suspension is still fitted (many have been converted to coil springs) and it works through all of its settings, from access height to fully raised. The low-ratio transmission engages as it ought to. We were able to drive the vehicle a short distance and can confirm that it drove well on test.
SUMMARY
This is a really smart example of a one of the very, very last P38s in a terrific engine and trim combination. It’s a grand and stately old thing that offers unrivalled luxury and comfort and is brilliantly presented in very good overall condition, and with

About Max Bids
The max bid process allows you to bid without any hassle.
Enter your maximum bid and we will then bid on your behalf to ensure you're the highest bidder - just enough to keep you in the lead and only up until your maximum.
Anti-sniping
Car & Classic prevent auction snipers from bidding in the last seconds to win an auction.
Auctions are extended by 3 minutes if anyone bids within the last 2 minutes to allow other bidders to react and counter-bid.
Auto-bidding increments
If your maximum bid is equal to or below the reserve price, your maximum bid will be applied in full if you are the highest bidder.
If you are the highest bidder and place a maximum bid above the reserve, we will automatically put in the reserve as your first bid.
Once the reserve has been met, Car & Classic will make sure you are the highest bidder using only the bidding increments stated below.
