The Appeal
Built on the same platform as the Volvo S60, V70 estate, S80 and XC90, the XC70 was marketed as an estate car for people who needed off-road capability but didn’t want a big SUV. Renowned for its comfort and engineering excellence, it became popular as a towing vehicle.
Broadly similar to the V70 estate, the XC70 has a raised ride height, extensive black plastic body cladding and (as on this example) four-wheel drive. It also benefits from a hill descent control system (just as on Land Rovers), which allows steep descents to be tackled in a slow and controlled manner.
This example is in extremely good condition and comes with the reassurance of a full service history and recent invoices.

The car comes with the original Volvo folder with owner’s manual and service record – which is all fully stamped. Recent invoices record regular expenditure to keep the car in sound running order, and the MoT is valid until December 2023.
The vendor is selling the car as he has other cars and feels that he doesn’t use this one enough.

The car’s interior suggests that it has been carefully looked after and probably had little off-road use – there’s very little wear on the front seats; the door cards, carpets and roof lining are all clean and there’s little to give away the car’s nineteen years. There are sturdy plastic overmats which have undoubtedly helped to keep the carpets in both front and rear footwells in extremely good condition.
The leather seats are comfortable and this really is a luxurious driving environment that rivals many of its high-end contemporaries. The stereo is of good quality and seems to work as it should. In the capacious load bay, the carpet lining is clean with no stains or tears and there’s a 12-volt outlet.

As one would expect of a car this age, there are a few minor rust spots appearing – one on the roof, and one on the driver’s door. There are a few fine scratches on the rear offside door, and a scuff on the rear nearside door, but otherwise the metallic blue paintwork looks very good.
Both rear wheels have corrosion coming through, but all four wheels have Michelin tyres which appear to be recent.
The badges, trim and light lenses are all in excellent condition and overall the car presents very well.

Even just moving the car around for photographs, it was apparent that it drives beautifully, the gears engage smoothly and quietly, and the diesel engine idles with a healthy note. The vendor reports that it drives extremely well while the paperwork demonstrates that it’s had regular servicing and any issues have been promptly addressed. The D5 iteration of the XC70 is renowned as a towing vehicle but as there’s no towbar here this one has probably never been used for this purpose.
Open the bonnet and everything is in good order for a car of this age and mileage, and similarly underneath the car nothing seems amiss.
Summary
A comfortable and capable estate car with four-wheel drive, the XC70 is a trusty workhorse with an impressively luxurious interior. This one has clearly been carefully looked after by previous owners and will no doubt offer many more years and miles of reliable motoring.
