A finely presented example of the first series of Porsche Cayenne
With just a single owner to date and a full and documented service history
Clearly lightly used having covered a mere 4,400 miles a year on average
The Appeal
By the dawn of the 1990’s Porsche were in the doldrums. They were significantly in the red and only sold around 23,000 cars globally in 91/92. Diversification away from over-reliance on the 911 was considered the key. The first step was the arrival of the Boxster in 1996 at which point thoughts turned to the “third Porsche.” Due to lobbying by the American arm of Porsche, an offroad concept was agreed upon. Porsche teamed up with Volkswagen on a project called “Colorado,” the ultimate product of which was the all new Cayenne and its Volkswagen Touareg cousin.
Our example is a first generation, E1 model and comes in sought-after 4.5L V8 specification mated to the six-speed Tiptronic gearbox. Unusually, for this vintage of Cayenne, this example is a one owner car from new with a sensible and original mileage. As you will see from the photographic package, the condition can only be described as excellent. Those who know these remarkable cars will understand how rare that is.
The History and Paperwork
Our car was registered in July 2006 and supplied via Porsche Centre, Wilmslow
The original lucky owner has been the car’s one and only keeper ever since
During this time the Cayenne has clearly been lightly used and well cared for
There is a good level of paperwork included with this car
The current V5 in the name of the single owner is on hand
The original book pack is present including the original service book
The latter documents a total of 10 services from Porsche dealers and independents
There are also entries for Pre-Delivery Inspection, brake fluid change and corrosion warranty check
An invoice for a recent, professional wheel refurbishment is also present
Two, original Porsche keys are included
The online MoT history shows a current MoT valid until July 2023
The Interior
The brief for the new Cayenne demanded luxury, utility and sportiness to each be represented
The Cayenne’s cabin does a perfect job of combining those key elements
The condition of this cabin must rate as excellent throughout
Clearly this example has benefitted from its recent professional interior detailing
This included a full re-connolising of all cabin leathers
The interior of this example is predominantly finished in Steel Grey
The front seats are finished in soft leather with perforations to the centre panels
The front seats are fully electrically adjustable and heated
The rear bench is similarly trimmed and benefits from a centre folding armrest
The rear bench offers a split/fold function for increased practicality when needed
The outer two rear seat bases are electrically heated
Individual climate system vents are included for the rear passengers
Door cards appear to be in an equally good condition
These are finished in both leather and carpet and feature accents of brushed aluminium
The dashboard is dominated by the large, central PCM (Porsche Communication Management) screen
This is the interface for many of the car’s systems including satellite navigation and sound system
A binnacle of familiar Porsche gauges sit behind the leather, multi-function steering wheel
The gauges include the large, signature Porsche tachometer and speedometer
A central TFT screen also communicates key information to the driver
The steering wheel houses numerous controls including Tiptronic gear-change buttons
The steel grey carpets look in decent condition if a little stained in places
These have been additionally protected by heavy duty Porsche carpet mats
The huge boot is fully trimmed in matching steel grey carpet
Contents can be shielded from prying eyes by the original roller cover
The original tool set is present under the boot floor but not, seemingly, the spare wheel
The Exterior
This example is finished in Titanium Metallic silver
The overall impression given by the external presentation is very positive overall
There is a very high level of metallic flake evident in the paintwork
All areas appear to exude a deep and lustrous shine
Similarly, the bodywork appears to be very sound
The panel gaps all appear tight and symmetrical in typical Porsche fashion
That’s not to say there isn’t the odd scrape and minor paint bubble in evidence
These have been photographed and can only be expected for a car of this age
Light lenses and cabin glass appear to be in good condition with no obvious issues
Our car sits on 20-inch Cayenne “Sport Techno” alloy wheels
These have recently enjoyed a full and professional refurbishment
New centre caps have also been fitted
They are fitted with a mixed set of tyres in a 275/40 configuration
The purity of the E1 design combined with the fine condition make for an eye-catching car
The Mechanics
The Cayenne S, featured here, is propelled by the 4.5L V8 petrol engine
This naturally aspirated unit was originally rated at 340bhp and 420 nm of torque
Power is delivered via a six-speed Tiptronic transmission to a permanent four-wheel drive system
Automatic locking diffs and low range gearbox are included for off-road excursions
In this configuration the car was good for a 7 second 0-60mph time and 150mph
PHC, ABS and ABD all work together to help maintain composure in all conditions
The under-bonnet presentation appears in keeping with the car’s maintenance history
The underside looks clean and straight, too, for an occasional off-road car
The Cayenne has been regularly maintained throughout its life
It boasts a sensible, original mileage added progressively
This results in a car that is reported to be in an excellent mechanical condition
The owner reports that the car “runs like a dream and just asks to be driven.”
Summary
The Cayenne wasn’t without its detractors when it arrived as the “third Porsche” in 2002. Purists took a while to get used to a Porsche that wasn’t a blatantly sports orientated model. The gamble came good for Porsche, however, with the Cayenne remaining a mainstay of the Porsche range to this day. The stock of the early cars is definitely on the up. The purity of the design has aged well, and the driving dynamics are hard to match by competitors.
This is a great example. It remains highly unusual to find a single owner, sensible original mileage example of the original E1. When prices were at a low, many weren’t cared for as they should have been. Our car is a remarkable exception to that rule. It is in a lovely condition with a pristine and attractive interior. The full-service history should certainly help ensure this Cayenne has a great deal of life left ahead of it.
