Description

A possibly unique 3. 0 litre carburettor, manual SM, Euro model with leather in a rare colour.

History of this car

Registered new in France on 06/ 10/ 1970 this distinctive SB series SM has lived in the Loire valley and we purchased her from the estate of the previous long term owner recently, and imported the car into the UK.

The majority of SMs were supplied with the standard 2. 7 litre motor. The torquier 3. 0 litre engine was developed for automatic transmission applications but a few were made available for the European market mated to the 5 speed manual transmission. This is one of those cars, thought to be only one of five made.

If you combine that specification with the factory original colour Rouge de Rio (code AC424), of which only 4% of SMs are thought to have been delivered in, you have possibly a unique vehicle.

Believed to be a two owner from new car, our car benefits from a recent specialist engine and mechanical refresh and is sold UK registered with an age related registration.

Body

The body and chassis are in clean condition, the paintwork having been renewed in 2016 in the original colour for a receipted 3000 Euros. Paint finish looks a little thick in places although it polishes up well as you can see.

Panel fitment is very good with even gaps on opening panels; stainless trim is all nice, glass is good with some delamination to the windscreen.

Mechanics

After a period of inactivity, our car has benefitted from a receipted recommissioning overhaul this year from Citroen specialist Garage Bouguennec. This covered the refreshing of the motor with exhaust valve, timing chain, big end, little end and main bearing replacement plus fitting a new clutch. Carburettors were stripped and rebuilt, oil cooler pipes have been changed and our car has electronic ignition and a stainless steel exhaust system, in addition to a cartouche vapour lock modified airbox.

The recommissioning also saw works to the hydraulic system with new spheres, accumulator and other works. All 4 tyres are also recent replacements.

A new advisory free MOT was obtained upon importation expiring March 2020.

Interior

Our car has the desirable original tobacco leather interior and an unmarked, taut headlining. The stitching to the leather has come undone in places and the steering wheel has some deterioration; the interior is therefore either well patinated or requiring improvement, depending on your point of view.

Boot

Good clean condition with spare and toolkit in place.

Summary

This car must represent for the collector the best value SM on the market: super rare specification with a lot of new important work at a very reasonable asking price!
