1948 EMC 350 cc Sports Split Cylinder with valuable number plate.
You don't see many EMC motorcycles and this example is superb. It is fitted with a BTH competition magneto and an Amal GP carburettor so I reckon at some point this example has seen a chequered flag. Road registered with original registration number being HAC 821 (transferable value over £2, 000) . Very well presented and highly detailed. A very unusual British motor cycle and part of two stroke development history. It starts easily and gives a very distinctive exhaust note. Nice on the road and ready to go.
EMC was founded 1946 and produced the 350 two stroke until 1952 selling around 1500 machines worldwide. Not a cheap 350 in its day but very, very well built. The split-single system sends the intake fuel-air mixture up one bore to the combustion chamber, sweeping the exhaust gases down the other bore and out of the exposed exhaust port. The rationale of the split-single two-stroke is that, compared to a standard two-stroke single, it can give better exhaust scavenging while minimising the loss of unburnt fresh fuel/ air charge through the exhaust port. As a consequence, a split-single engine can deliver better economy, and may run better at small throttle openings. The pilgrim oil pump fed two stoke oil in the cylinder for lubrication. Transmission was a very robust 4 speed Burnham gear box which is positive when going through the gears.

EMC Motorcycles or the Ehrlich Motor Co was a British motorcycle manufacturer. Based in Isleworth, the business was founded by Joseph Ehrlich who immigrated to the United Kingdom from Austria in the 1930s. He was a brilliant engineer working for Puch Styner until escaping to England Pre WW2, Joe Ehrlich made unique two-stroke motorcycles such as the one I have on offer today . Latterly moving on to EMC racing motors, One of which being ridden by Mike Hailwood bringing in top 6 results in GPs in the early 1960, s. He also developed racing car motors and his last project was an ultra-efficient environmental engine which he was developing on behalf of the British government. A truly talented man.
