With its numerous successes at Le Mans the Jaguar marque was riding the crest of a wave at the end of the 1950s. In 1959 it replaced its first compact saloon, the 2. 4/ 3. 4, retrospectively known as the MkI, with the comprehensively revised MkII. Available as a 2. 4-litre, a 3. 4-litre and a 3. 8-litre, it could legitimately claim to be the fastest four-door in the world – and at the wheel of a 3. 8-litre Bernard Consten won the Tour de France Automobile three times, between 1960 and 1963.
The MkII is a true four-seat grand tourer, with an aristocratic twin-cam engine, elegant styling, and a typically British charm. The interior, trimmed in leather and walnut veneer, is comfortable and luxurious and the car handles with poise despite its relative heaviness, thanks to a well-conceived chassis. As a result of its numerous qualities, it has become the most sought-after four-door saloon in the world of classic cars.
The model presented here is a French-market MkII with the 3. 4-litre engine and the four-speed manual gearbox with overdrive. Bought at auction in Paris in 2006 by its current owner, it had been fully restored. Since then it has always been scupulously maintained, as a large file of bills confirms. Elegantly finished in gunmetal grey, the panel gaps are correct and the chrome in good condition. The interior is still in its original and magnificently patinated red Connolly leather, the carpets are new, and the woodwork was restored in 2005. Additionally the headlining was replaced last year. An appreciable bonus is that the car is fitted with a Webasto sunroof – and after our test of the car we can report that wind noise is well suppressed and that there is no infiltration of water.
Steering well, with no play, and with the suspension in perfect order (the front tyres and all four dampers are new), the Jaguar is smooth and agreeable to drive. The Moss gearbox is precise, the overdrive operates crisply, and the torque-rich engine is happy to be given its head, if you want to hang onto the revs. Rounding out the picture, the clutch has recently been replaced, as have the brake pads. Beautiful, fast and carefully maintained, this is an opportunity not to be missed.
