Description

In 1989, Mercedes Benz introduced the fourth generation SL model, the R129, which was supplied in Europe with several engine options and named accordingly; the basic model was the 190hp three litre, inline six cylinder 300SL with 12 valves, and the 228hp three litre, inline six cylinder with 24 valves, known as the 300SL 24. But it was the 322hp 500SL with a five litre V8 engine, which made the headlines only surpassed by the flagship 600SL with its fabulous V12 engine.

The specification was high with electric windows, mirrors, seats and roof. The R129 model was the first convertible/ roadster to offer the automatic roll-bar deployment in event of rollover, although the driver could also manually raise and lower the roll-bar should he choose to, thus facilitating the clean look of the R129 without compromising the occupant's safety. The range topping 600SL offered up 389hp through its six Litre V12 engine, introduced in 1993 as the 600SL, it was then re-named the SL600 in 1994 and will reach 60mph in just 5. 9 seconds.

This range topping SL600 offered in solid black (paint code 040) with anthracite leather interior, which was supplied RHD in 1993 for the Sultan of Brunei, following which for 14 years it remained in the royal collection and has covered only 935 kilometres from new. Re-imported to the UK in 2017, this RHD example is understandably presented as new and represents a fantastic collector’s example with the most desirable engine combination. The 600SL fitted option codes are detailed below, this is an extremely desirable R129 SL Mercedes with the sought after V12 engine option coupled with incredibly low mileage and proven provenance from the Brunei royal family, this is a genuine collector’s car which we believe will be well priced for a virtually new car. It is worth noting that a virtually identical 600SL from the royal collection sold for a value in excess of £33, 000 at the Historics specialist car auction held at the Brooklands Motor Museum on the 19th May 2018.

Originally ordered for the royal household of His Highness, the Sultan of Brunei, the car was delivered new to Brunei in April 1993. It remained unregistered until 2015 when the collection in part was disposed of. It was sold through a Japanese brokerage and then imported to Jersey in 2017

The overall condition is as new, mechanically due to the low mileage and usage, the 600S which is having fluids and filters changed, together with a certain amount of recommissioning following display in the royal collection.
