1952 Bentley Mark VI Straight Eight Special

A rakish & stylish Bentley Mark VI special constructed by a skilled motor engineer using a Mark VI standard steel Saloon as the basis. A huge amount of thought went into the construction of this car. As a B81 straight eight engine was to be used, the chasiss was lengthened at the front & reduced at the rear by a similar amount. This allowed for the gear box, bulkhead, steering column & foot pedals to be left in situ in thier original positions. This also allows for the radiator to be set back giving the car the correct proportions. The chassis modifications were completed using a large machine table which was flat enough & robust enough for the chassis to be strapped down to ensuring the new datum points were adhered to when performing the modifications.
The body has been hand formed in aluminium using a wooden buck as a template, the design having been first sketched out & scaled up on an AO size drawing board. Subsequently the car was painted in masons black by Chester coachworks.
The B81 engine breathes through four carburettors with the exhaust exiting into a stainless steel straight through unit. A higer ratio 2. 88:1 Salisbury differential with Power-lok Limited Slip is fitted allied to Jaguar hydraulic Mark 7 Vacuum servo brakes to the rear of the car allowing the cars tremendous torque to be utilised as opposed to high revs. This is a fast powerful & quite loud car probably not well suited to shy retiring types. It goes as well as it looks & is a real pleasure to drive at speed down counrty B roads where it is in its element.
The interior is of red Hide with maroon carpets. A black tonneau cover fits snugly over the cockpit when not in use. Behind the seats is useful luggage space for overnight bags etc. The dash board is of turned aluminium with the usual mark VI Bentley instrumentation fitted to it. A removable battery cut off switch behind the passengers seat adds to security when leaving the car unattended.
