SUMMARY
Although build quality was much improved post 2006 at Mercedes, problems with engines did dog some MB models. For the W209 CLK, this was in the form of problems with premature wear of balance shaft sprockets on the M272 (V6) and M273 (V8) engines (just google M272 M273 Balance Shaft Issue) and on the smaller 4-Cylinder M271 engined cars, timing chains were prone to stretching and eventually snapping , if the correct oil hasn't been used and changed at the prescribed intervals. Both these issues can potentially destroy the engine, but even if caught before the worst happens can still cost thousands to rectify. This, as you can imagine, can make buying a W209 a bit of a lottery, unless, that is, you go for the most reliable variant in the range by far, the CLK220 CDI (like this one) with the extremely reliable OM646 engines.
This is an absolutely beautiful and well optioned example of the rather handsome Mercedes W209 CLK Coupe, and was originally supplied by Ridgeway Mercedes. Finished in very classy gleaming Obsidian Black with Anthracite leather, it’s been owned for the vast majority of its life by husband and wife doctors (from six months old bought as an ex-Mercedes Demo until September 2019), and has been serviced correctly on the dot by Mercedes Main dealerships and more latterly respected Mercedes Specialists, and as result comes with a very comprehensive and full history to substantiate the very low mileage. Also the fact that every single MOT the car has had, expired on 30th March, which I think speaks volumes about how organised the owners must have been when it came to vehicle maintenance. It’s also lived all its life in the milder climes of the South of England too, which goes some way to explaining why it’s so good underneath.
The overall condition of this car is incredible, both on top, underneath and inside and it’s probably about as perfect as you could reasonably expect a car of this age to be; I have to say it’s actually one of the nicest cars I’ve had in quite some time. It’s also fantastic to drive too; the ultra reliable OM646 provides a rather handy 340nm of mid range torque, which makes for effortless overtaking and swift progress, but yet is extremely economical, with 50mpg realistically achievable in real world driving. It’s also a pre-DPF model too, so that’s another less headache too.
This is one of the few cars that almost does it all in that its stylish yet practical, good to drive, lively, and very economical – there’s not many vehicles that can claim to tick all those boxes, and part of me wants to keep this car for myself. Also, being made towards the end of the W209’s model run, Mercedes had the CLK pretty much sorted by 2007, so it doesn’t suffer some of the issues that afflicted earlier models. It also comes from a time when Mercedes had well and truly got their “mojo” back in terms of build quality, and as a result I think in some ways that improved quality makes the CLK feel like an updated , but more refined W124 Coupe.
So, in summary, if you want a prestige car that looks amazing, has been properly maintained and is practical, safe and nice to drive, but won’t cost a fortune to run, you won’t go too far wrong with the beautiful Mercedes CLK. You could spend many times more than I’m asking for this car and you still probably wouldn’t get something as nice; in my opinion exceptional prestige cars like this are a real bargain at the moment, and I can never understand why anyone would go and buy a new car for it to lose a fortune on the day you drive it off the forecourt, when you can have something like this.
MTSV CLASSIC MERCEDES
MTSV (an abbreviation for Mark Taylor Specialist Vehicles) was born out an incurable and lifelong obsession for anything with four wheels on it, especially those carrying the legendary Three Pointed Star. Established by me, Mark Taylor in November 2005 when the Classic Car market was in its infancy and long before “everyman and his dog” had jumped on the Classic Car bandwagon. Specialising in Classic Mercedes from the late 1970’s, through to the 2000’s, I also frequently have the odd foray into other quality classics and sometimes even modern cars, however the qualification is always that it has to be interesting, and/ or just a little different; my theory, which has served me well so far, is that if I like it, someone else probably will!
My main specialisation is the legendary Mercedes W201 190 and Mercedes W124; I firmly believe these models were about as good as cars got in terms of sheer, teutonic quality, and believe them to be the best cars Mercedes have ever made. I’ve built up a substantial knowledge of both the W201 190 & W124 over many years, which I’m always happy to share, and have recently contributed to a W201 buying guide written by Julian Parish. I also have extensive experience of the most of the Mercedes models within my “band of interest” namely the W116, W123, W202 & W203 C-Class, W208 & W209 CLK, W210 & W211 E-Class, W126 & W140 S-Class, R170 & R171 SLK and the R129 SL-Class. Obviously as time goes on later models are coming onto my radar too.
MTSV has always, and will always focus on quality rather than quantity, and in doing so has earned, and continues to maintain an enviable reputation among its many customers both in the UK and abroad, many who are now three, four and even five times repeat customers, some of which have become good friends too. I’m also listed in the Mercedes Club Directory as a recommended business and I’ve also had several of my rarer cars featured in the motoring press too.
THE MTSV DIFFERENCE
Unlike some, I don't just simply go out, buy any old car, give it a good clean, then advertise it for more than the purchase price, disregarding any issues the car may have in the hope the new buyer won't notice…I just couldn't do that. The cars I source are carefully selected and I work very hard so that when my cars leave me, I have the satisfaction of knowing they are as good as they possibly can be within the constraints I have. As such I have many repeat customers and new customers that have been recommended via word of mouth…the ultimate accolade for anyone in business.
Any other questions, please feel free to contact me via the details on my website. I'm a firstly and foremostly a true car enthusiast of many, many years, and a Mercedes Club Member, so it's a pleasure to meet and speak to like-minded people.
Finally, I'm situated in Keighley, West Yorkshire (Postal Code Area BD21) which is approximately 11 miles from Skipton, and 20 miles West of Leeds.
Thanks for reading my advert!
