EXTERIOR
The body and paint remain in excellent condition all round, with even panel gaps and a deep glossy finish. The Labrador Blue is perfectly offset by the plentiful brightwork and adorning trim, all of which still presents in great original shape. Upon closer inspection the sills and wheel arches are in particularly fine condition and further defy the car’s 36 years of age – the underside is notably clean too (pictures available on request). All the glass is factory original with the correct Mercedes etchings, and the rear window still sports the sticker from the 1984 supplying dealer, Maloney and Rhodes Limited. All in all, a tremendous rust-free example in stunning condition throughout, having clearly been treasured from new.
INTERIOR
The generously proportioned cabin is a wonderful place to be. The spotless cloth upholstery presents to the highest standard with no wear to report, and the rear seats look as if they’ve never even been sat in. The carpets throughout are extremely well presented, and the dash is entirely unmarked. Pristine Zebrano wood inlays add a welcome contrast, still retaining a glossy finish with no unsightly scratches or lacquer damage to be found. Other commonly worn items such as the steering wheel and gear selector are very well preserved indeed, and the switchgear is still reassuringly solid to operate – a real testament to the superior fit and finish of Mercedes from this era. Looking above, the headlining is undamaged and the factory Webasto sunroof operates smoothly.
ENGINE AND TRANSMISSION
The 2. 3-litre M102 engine performs well on test. The car pulls effortlessly in every gear and gets up to speed with little fuss – it may not be the fastest four-door saloon of the era but is certainly one of the smoothest. The car is accompanied by a detailed maintenance record and was last serviced in January 2020 at 77k miles. It was then fully inspected upon arrival with us, with any mechanical items requiring attention having since been rectified.
WHEELS, TYRES AND BRAKES
The Mercedes sits on its original 15-inch steels with colour-coded wheel trims, all presenting in great condition with only light marking to speak of. The wheels are wrapped in a matching set of Michelin tyres and the brakes operate well, stopping the car quickly and in a straight line.
HISTORY FILE
This rare Labrador Blue 230E was supplied new in May 1984 by Maloney and Rhodes Limited in Cambridge. The History File is complete with the original service booklet, owner’s manual, document pouch, numerous MOT certificates, and a raft of invoices dating right back to 1988. The service booklet is stamped with 16 entries at the following mileages: 5k, 6k, 13k, 13k, 29k, 34k, 38k, 49k, 53k, 54k, 55k, 56k, 62k, 67k, 72k, and most recently at 77k miles in January 2020. The MOT is valid until January 2021.
