A history of Italian entrepreneurship
Ferdinando Innocenti proved his intelligence, entrepreneurial mindset and perseverance since his early youth. Indeed, after having completed the apprenticeship in the father’s hardware store, and after having completed the technical study, he begun to gather capitals by exchanging iron with lubricant oil. Unfortunately, he lost all his capital almost immediately during the 1920s, due to the failure of the bank where he had deposited it. However, Innocenti did not give up and he restarted his career in the field of metallurgy by trading scaffolds with no welding and he patented the well-known "tubi Innocenti", namely the tubes/ clamps scaffolding. During the 1930s, Innocenti became an important wire of the Italian entrepreneurial fabric: fe founded the "Società Generale per l’Industria Metallurgica e Meccanica Innocenti", and during the second post-war period he created the worldwide known Lambretta scooter, whose name recalls the Lambro river, which flowed close to the Innocenti factory. Innocenti’s objective was providing Italians with an economical and easy to maintain mean of transport. He achieved his objective simply responding to the needs of the post-war Italian society. Indeed, the Lambretta was success, and the factory decided to land in the automotive sector during the 1960s. It is well known that Innocenti manufactured the Mini on behalf of the BMC, but the first original Innocenti car was the 950 Spider designed by Ghia, manufactured by OSI in Turin and based on the mechanic of the A40.
