EXTERIOR
This striking Black Series-inspired SL500 presents to a brilliant standard throughout. The gleaming pale grey wrap is in superb order all round and certainly draws admiring glances when out on the road – and when parked up, the impressive vertically-opening doors further add to the sense of occasion.
The extensive Black Series facelift was professionally carried out over nine months, and cost in excess of £20, 000 to complete. The process involved a long list of new parts including the bonnet, front wings, bumpers, grille, sills, and genuine Mercedes Xenons to name but a few. Bespoke wheel arches and wheel arch liners were also fabricated to ensure an authentic finish, a process unique to this car. Matching Black Series exhaust tailpipes were custom-fitted to the Mercedes exhaust, the resulting sound a perfect match to the car’s imposing aesthetic.
INTERIOR
The SL’s cabin feels airy and luxurious, with premium anthracite leather adorning almost every surface. The supportive sports seats remain in excellent original condition with minimal wear, the upholstery still notably supple. The interior is rich in fine detail, from the beautiful sweeping leather stitched dashboard to the carbon effect trim. All the switchgear is fully functional and remains feeling solid to operate. A touchscreen Pioneer DAB head unit sits in place of the outdated COMAND system.
ENGINE AND TRANSMISSION
The glorious 5-litre V8 fires up with an intoxicating burble and idles effortlessly up to temperature. The exhaust was custom made for the car resulting in a deep, powerful growl; during this process the restrictive mid-section filters were also removed to increase power at higher RPMs. On test the SL not only sounds fantastic but also drives particularly well; the five-speed automatic gearbox is as smooth as ever and can be operated manually using the tiptronic function if desired.
The car was most recently serviced in March 2020 at 65, 686 miles. We have since had it fully inspected and freshly MOT’d upon arrival with us for the new keeper’s peace of mind.
WHEELS, TYRES AND BRAKES
This fantastic evocation sits on 20-inch TSW Bathurst alloys in anthracite, carefully selected by the current owner to further enhance the SL’s premium styling. The wheels are shod in a matching set of Falken tyres fitted at 63k miles. Following inspection we have had new brake discs and pads fitted all round at the current mileage; the brakes feel sharp and responsive, bringing the car to a standstill with little effort.
HISTORY FILE
Registered in June 2003, this extensively upgraded SL500 has covered only 65k miles from new. A cherished example, the car was owned by the same family from 2005 until we sold it to the current owner back in 2015. The car was professionally facelifted in 2014, and recent work prior to that included the replacement of all roof and boot seals, a known weak point of the R230 SL.
Under current ownership the car has been further improved with the fitting of LSD Lamborghini-style doors. The factory COMAND system has also been upgraded to a Pioneer AVIC-F77DAB touchscreen unit that sits perfectly in the dash.
Present in the History File are all owners’ manuals within the Mercedes document wallet, a raft of maintenance invoices and old MOT certificates, spare key, and service booklet. The car has been serviced at the following mileages, 7k, 19k, 31k, 44k, 53k, 62k, 64k, and most recently at 65k miles in March 2020. The MOT is valid until June 2021.
