- An amazing discovery of a exceptionally rare vehicle -
EQUIPMENT:
Steel 'U Section' chassis, twin rear wheels with heavy duty rear axle, heavy duty rear leaf springs, steel rear mudguards, chassis mounted rear lamp clusters, dual tow pack with electrical socket, Marchal cab mounted trafficators, cab mounted beacon brackets, Ducellier headlamps with original equipment yellow bulbs, opening windscreen, folding door mirrors, hinged bonnet with ventilation louvers, spare road wheel, cab bench seat, Jaeger instruments.
EXTERIOR:
Finished in White with contrasting Red mudguards. This 1952 example served duty from new as a breakdown truck in France & the resulting colourscheme & patinated appearence are truly special! All road wheels, seven in total, have been stripped, galvanised, primed ready for finish coat & then shod with brand new period correct tyres costing in excess of £1, 500 alone.
Upon inspection, the cab has been preserved in an excellent condition with only minor surface rust to report, along with the chassis which remains amazingly clean & rust hole free! The next keeper has the option between preserving the decades of patina or restoring to an as new order. Either option will result in a fantastic & unique vehicle.
INTERIOR:
Spartan & utilitarian is the best way to describe the cabin area! A very simple bench seat trimmed in Black vinyl, wonderful opening windscreen for interior ventalation & just two gauges - Speedometer & battery meter, both produced by Jaeger.
ENGINE & TRANSMISSION:
All 'R23' models were built with the famous 'Traction Avant' petrol four cylinder engine coupled to a four speed manual transmission with rear wheel drive.
After nearly thirty years in static collections, the drivetrain remians unstarted / untested & will require full restoration or could be ideal for upgrade with a contemporary transformation!
HISTORY FILE:
Incredibly, this 1952 Citroen is believed to have covered a mere 10, 000 miles (17, 000 km) since new. Due to the amount of years spent in storage, 1991 - 2020, the overall excellent structual condition & long term ownerships, it would appear to be correct - however we cannot confirm this due to age & originating in France.
Produced as a chassis cab & then built into a bespoke breakdown truck for a small local garage, located in rural France. Seldom used for the purpose intended & enjoying indoor garage storage from new, remaining in the garage proprietors possession until an English collector discovered & imported the 'R23' into the UK.
Since importation from the Loire Et Cher region in 1991, she has thankfully remained totally untouched & unrestored, forming part of two private UK collections & has now become available only due to loss of storage.
Accompanying the Citroen is the original 'Carte Grise' French regsitration document, UK importation documents including Customs invoice, '23R' Owners manual, wonderful drawings of various '23R' chassis cabs & bodywork options, 'Floating Power' Citroen Traction Club magazines & colour photographs showing her in England during the 1990s.
