YOU rarely see Wolseley 4/ 44s offered for sale these days. A reasonably expensive, luxury family saloon back in its day, the 4/ 44 was a cut above most other BMC models. Still a pleasure to drive after all these years, this lovely old girl has an engine so quiet that you will assume you have stalled at junctions as you can hardly hear her idling! Extremely solid with excellent floor pans visibly both inside and out. Her interior is most pleasant with the original tan leather just nicely worn and without any visible damage. The wooden dash has recently been removed, re-varnished and replaced.
Also in the past couple of years, she has been treated to a suspension rebuild, carb rebuild, new clutch, new brake master, oil seals to both diff and gearbox and new seat springs. She runs beautifully, as mentioned, and has a lovely smooth column gear change. The bulk of her paint work is presentable, although I would say that the nearside rear wing displays faded/ damaged paint and that the roof - also faded - may well respond to a cut and polish. The front wings, valance, bonnet and four doors are perfectly acceptable the way they are. The offside rear wing probably falls under that category as well. There is a very small piece of metal missing from the lip of her arch. The previous owner of three years was planning to paint her in good time, but had busied himself with the aforementioned jobs first of all. A change of plans forced his hand and he decided to part with her. The chrome strips you see along the sides were delicately placed there by me for the benefit of the photos. All removed chrome, along with interior door cards, door wood cappings (good condition) and anything else which may have been removed, come with the vehicle.
This is a most appealing 4/ 44 and the sort of classic that ought to be adopted as a kind of family pet. Yes, she could be improved cosmetically - she is remarkably solid - but that is not always necessary in every owner's eyes. Enjoy as she is.
I have valued her accordingly and not as a 7 or 8k classic simply based on make, model and rarity. Context is all.
