Introduced in 1967, the Mercury Cougar was marketed as an upscale version of the popular Ford Mustang. While it shared many components with the Mustang, the Cougar was the more luxurious pony car. First generation Mercury Cougars have made their mark in the classic muscle car scene.
This particular Mercury Cougar is a base model two door hardtop, with a 289 V8 linked to an automatic transmission. We acquired this well-traveled car in Texas, on a 1981 California title (Sun Valley, Los Angeles). It was built in the Ford plant in Dearborn, Michigan and delivered to a dealer in Brookings, South Dakota.
The Cougar looks well-used and bruised, but is remarkably solid. Rust damage is limited to a small area on the driver's door, on top of the inner front fenders and a small spot on the lower right rear corner panel. From here on, the next path can be to either preserve it's ratty looks, or to bring the body back to as-new condition.
The interior needs to be completely renovated. Seat upholstery is torn and the dashboard top is warped from Southern California's sun rays. Missing parts are the spare wheel, jack and tools and the keys.
Mechanically, the car would be needing at least a thorough check up and partial rebuild. The engine turns by hand, but we haven't tried to start it. One of the freeze plugs has popped out and was found clamped-in between the engine block and fuel lines.
A solid survivor and great project car for practical muscle car enthusiasts.
