The 420SL sat between the 300SL and 500SL in the European range, bridging the gap between the six-cylinder 300SL and range topping 5. 0 litre V8 500SL with a more than respectable 215hp from an all new V8 engine. At £37, 950 it carried a £5, 000 premium over the 300SL with a list price of £41, 700… just shy of the average house price in 1988, which was £45, 090. These were expensive cars.
On top of the original purchase price this car boasts the cost options of leather seats (with rear child seats), and an outside temperature gauge, whilst standard fit items on the 420SL that 300SL buyers had to pay for included Metallic Paint, a Limited Slip Differential, Cruise Control, and Headlamp Wash Wipe. All told this car had an ‘as new’ price of £39, 457 with options, or £104, 000 today.
This 420SL does have air conditioning fitted, using the correct style of buttons and controls. We believe this was fitted by a company called Alpine Air, a popular upgrade in the 1980s and a quality item to fit to any car. These kits (and controls) are no longer available and haven’t been for some time, so this is clearly an upgrade that has been part of this car for many years. A neat addition to what is already a very nice car.
The beautiful shade of Blue-Black Metallic is a highly desirable colour, perfectly complimented by the smart grey leather.
At the hands of two owners this car has covered 29, 000 miles, being meticulously cared for in this time. The well presented history file includes a service book showing 23 stamps, with the first 5 coming from Castles Mercedes-Benz and 15 more from Gerard Mann Mercedes-Benz. Between 2008 and 2020 (under the stewardship of the second owner) this car spent a number of years in Portugal, used sparingly and enjoyed in the fine climate. As with all our cars, this 420SL has undergone significant preparation before being presented for sale.
This is a car that is ready to be enjoyed, having a great deal of important work pertaining to the cosmetics and handling taken care of prior to arrival in our showroom. A Mercedes-Benz 420SL offers the full-bore V8 SL experience whilst being every so slightly more refined than the 500SL, a smoother ride that feels eager to please throughout the rev range and at all speeds.
