SUMMARY
Finished in 348 Pearl Blue with Grey Leather and supplied by Jackson's St. Helier, this early C220D spent the first 20 years of its life in the milder climate of Jersey in the tenure of just one owner. It was then subsequently owned by a gentleman from London right up to this year when it found its way to me. Both owners clearly didn’t skimp on maintenance judging by the service history. I absolutely love this car, is so charming; there’s just something so incredibly addictive about these older MB diesels, and their durable simplicity;
Please note I’m selling this car on an “as is” Trade Sale basis, as I have far too much on to do the work required to bring it up to my usual standards. Essentially selling good cars off always saddens me, as I spend a lot of time finding examples that are worth improving, as most are well past their best now. However there’s only so many hours in the day, and I’ve currently got six cars on the go, so I have to be realistic absout my capabilities.
This W202 C220D is essentially a very nice car, and for not that much effort and outlay, it could be an exceptional example of its type. Anyone who knows W202’s will tell you that half the battle with these cars is corrosion, but with this one having spent all its time in either Jersey or London, body work is very well preserved; the underside is particularly good, and certainly belies its 27 years.
Here’s what I planned to do:
* Paint both bumpers due to London “contact parking”
* Paint to n/ s wing, n/ s front door and rear quarter panel due to minor scratches etc
* Address a minor seepage from the diesel pump when cold (seals are still available)
* Wood veneer around gearstick is cracking, so that will need to be addressed as it spoils an otherwise immaculate interior
* Replace metal strips in front door sill trims (these peeel up over the years)
* General Service, although the last one wasn’t too long ago
* Possibly fit a set of newly refurbished alloy wheels
* PDR (Dent Man) to remove a few parking dings
* Full Detail and Polish
I’ve already replaced the glow plug control unit, a few bulbs and the electric aerial as well as other bits and batts. I have to say the car drives exceptionally well and and is incredibly economical, averaging around 50mpg. It’s also worth mention in the wake of the recent fuel crisis (that actually wasn’t a crisis) as with any old school Mercedes Diesel (not CDI engines!) you’ll never be stranded with this car due to unavailability of fuel, as it will happily run on SVO (Bio Diesel/ Vegetable Oil) if required. Also, it feels far from underpowered and will happily cruise at well over the speed limit if required.
The car comes with a superb service history, documenting its life from day one to now. The car also comes supplied with ALL its original keys too, which is quite unusual and wheels are all shod with matching Michelin tyres, which I think speaks volumes about the car, and its ownership. As soon as you drive this car, you know its a good one; there's no creaks, no suspension knocks and the car rides like an older Mercedes should; compliant, but controlled and unfussed.
So in summary, use as it is, or improve it as you drive it. W202’s are starting to find favour of late, and these early example are becoming quite sought after, as they share many of their processor’s (the W201 190) attributes and still retain that solid feel associated with Mercedes of yesteryear. If it doesn’t sell within a month or so, I will gladly do the work required, however it will then be re-advertised for considerably more.
THE MTSV DIFFERENCE
Unlike some, I don’t just simply go out, buy any old car, give it a good clean, then advertise it for more than the purchase price, disregarding any issues the car may have in the hope the new buyer won’t notice…I just couldn’t do that. The cars I source are carefully selected and I work very hard so that when my cars leave me, I have the satisfaction of knowing they are as good as they possibly can be within the constraints I have. As such I have many repeat customers and new customers that have been recommended via word of mouth…the ultimate accolade for anyone in business. To read more, see my website at - details above
