Launched in 1998 the Cougar was part of Fords global redesign and featured the latest new edge styling but despite a costly marketing campaign the car was never a big seller for Ford in Europe despite some excellent reviews and the car was dropped altogether in 2002 due to poor sales. Now over 20 years on since first release the Cougar is a very rare site on UK roads.
This 1999 Cougar VX 2. 5L automatic is a lovely low mileage example having covered a mere 45, 114 miles from new with a fully stamped Ford history and has interesting provenance as it was used on set for filming a main TV drama during 2018/ 19. Owned by a Ford main dealership upto a year old it was then purchased by a lady owner through the Ford Direct program before eventually being purchased by the film company and used on set for filming. In with the cars paperwork is a leaflet for a very expensive storage facility in central London so it’s clear the cars led a pampered life when not in use.
We were particularly drawn to this example as it has a remarkably original shell and having owned late 90’s Fords ourselves in the past we know how badly they can suffer from corrosion on the sills, arches, underside inc subframe, brake lines etc etc but we would deem this car a ‘survivor’ example that is remarkably solid and rust free all over and showing none of the usual signs of corrosion that can terminally affect these cars which often leads to ‘un-economic’ MOT failures.
Test drive reports a car that is a pleasant suprise to drive with great steering, a driving position that is spot on and a tuneful V6 engine along with a taut chassis that tallys in with this cars very low miles and a smooth autobox, the Cougar V6 really is a very underated car.
Work just carried out at 45, 114 miles inc new front brake calipers along with new Borg & Beck discs, pads F+R plus and four new Avon ZV7 tyres. MOT'd until Dec 22' no advisories
