LDV Convoy Horsebox Transit Diesel 5 Speed - 2 Ramps Alloy Body - Camper Project
Offered For Sale is 'Charlie Box', our 1999 LDV Convoy Horsebox Camper Project.
Please read the advert carefully, I always try to cover as much as I can so you can ascertain after reading if this is the project for you.
Bought 2018 he was driven back to a friends farm were he has waited for a planned camper conversion.
We chose Charlie Box as the basis for our camper due to the size of the rear body which lends itself well for a variety of layouts and also being based on the LDV Convoy with Ford running gear, service parts are easy to get and he could be driven on a normal car license (age permitting).
Fitted from the factory with the legendary Ford Transit banana diesel engine and 5 speed box he has covered just 100, 000 with DVLA MOT history on line to verify. Last MOT ran out on 01-07-2019. MOT history also shows evidence of quite a bit of work completed to keep him on the road. He ran well with little to no smoke on start up or whilst accelerating. Gears and gearbox selected well and clutch bite was good also. Diff and prop are in good condition with no undue noises through the twin wheel rear axle. Tyres may require replacing.
The rear horsebox body is a very good size, the main box is 6' Wide x 10' Long x 7' High with an additional area above the cab 6' Wide x 3' Long.
This has a large rear ramp with both assister springs is very good order. There is a side ramp also with the drivers side of the body, again with a very good single assister spring. The passenger side has a small door for access to and from the rear without dropping either of the ramps. This would require a step putting in place.
There are a couple of leaks within the aluminium roof that would need address where rivets have come away as well as an area that would require a fibreglass patch perhaps to prevent water ingress. Making him watertight would be fairly straightforward. There is also a ply section of the rear body above the cab area that needs replacing.
The original timber floor remains in place under a later added checker-plate floor. Looking up under the body the timber appears to be intact.
The cab area is basic and very well used with wear and damage to seats and interior trim. The body appears solid but there is evidence of previous welding work also detailed within the previous MOT's. Engine bay and arches have also seen previous welding work and further inspection will perhaps reveal more required . Bonnet release has broken, front window rubber would benefit from replacement and general areas tidying. The lower panel is good as are the doors, rear cab corners and gutters. Paint is old and tired.
The front section of the cab chassis has evidence of welding work but will require work in other areas prior to obtaining an MOT. The chassis from the cab backwards remains in good condition, there has been some welding but this remains solid as do all of the suspension mounts and body mounts.
The rear body is bolted via two chassis rails onto the chassis rails of the pickup chassis. Separating the two appears straight forward.
Since being parked up he was started and moved regularly up until July this year where other commitment have seen him sitting untouched. Last month he was started but was reluctant to rev, the starter motor then stopped working. I have replaced the starter with a new unit. I have replaced some of the fuel lines, checked the injectors and the pump and fuel is getting through, the fuel filter is new and full but he now wont start or turn over. I suspect a wiring issue as someone has previously added a switch in to ignition system but I haven't looked further. These are a basic system so is more than likely something silly that I've missed. The brakes might also need freeing off as he was last parked with the handbrake on.
This is a great basis for either remaining as a horsebox with both the ramps providing entry and exit or to convert into a unique glamping pod or camper build.
We had intended to utilise him as the latter, with the large rear ramp being utilised as a supported deck with access to the main body through a timber door built into the rear aperture next to a window. The area above the cab was to be a folding seat creating a bed area and with the addition of units down one side for a kitchen and a folding table and chairs against the bulkhead, we were then looking to add a wood burner next to the small access door. The size and possible layouts as a camper would provide a perfect vehicle for touring and traveling.
I had started to acquire some elements toward the build and some spares, these can be included within the full asking price only. 4 excellent Michelin commercial tyres on LDV Convoy steel rims, a timber house door with locks but no frame, aluminium frame horse box windows and some caravan cushions, headlights, brake master cylinder and steering wheel, all in good condition.
He hasn't been for an MOT, the work required to achieve this is unlikely to be limited only to the information detailed above. This is a perfect winter project, its not a weekends work and your away. The inside of the box needs a good clean, repairing to make watertight and then given time to dry out whilst you plan your build.
He will need collecting with a suitable recovery vehicle, that will be the responsibility of the purchaser to organise and pay for. I am not able to deliver him nor am I able to provide space or facilities in order for you to work on him to then drive him away. Recovery only please.
