Description
The Classic Car Company is delighted to present this very special and well known Fiat 500 – ‘Alfi’. Alfi has been a regular on the Italian classic car scene for nearly forty years, competing at hill climbs, featuring in magazines, and being displayed at shows up and down the country.
Alfi was built on a 1972 RHD 500L, by Jimmy Di Carlo – founder of The Fiat 500 Enthusiasts Club. Jimmy and his wife Jan bought him in 1980, and they owned and worked on him for over 30 years.
Jimmy was a successful engineer, and worked on many 500s, including looking after F1 designer Gordon Murray’s Fiat 500. At first he rebuilt the original engine to 700cc capacity, but it was the second wave of his work that created the machine we see now.
He stripped the car completely (photos to document the work), removed the rear bulkhead and created a bespoke rear space frame to allow for a mid-engine configuration.
He chose an Alfa Romeo Sud Sprint engine (flat four boxer) and gearbox to drive the car:
• 1500cc
• High lift performance camshafts
• Twin double choke carbs
• Water cooled via front radiator
• 5 speed gearbox
• Disc brakes all round
• Rear wish bone suspension with coil over shock absorbers
• Fiat 500 steering box
Jimmy and Jan retired back to Italy (we believe in 2011) and drove Alfi the 541 miles! Alfi was shown at many shows in Italy before he was brought back to the UK in 2016 when purchased by his current owner.
After minimal use in the last 5 years, we have recently carried out a lot of recommissioning work to ensure Alfi is running correctly and is ready for a new custodian:
• Full engine service
• New timing belts
• Reset throttle linkages
• Re-build and re-jet carbs
• Carb tune on a rolling road to 76. 5 BHP
• New water pump
• Gear box service
• New clutch master cylinder
• New clutch slave cylinder
• Refit and align gear linkages
• New brake fluid
• Coolant change
• Steering box rebuild
Alfi truly is unique, in both design, sound and production. A one off. A standard Fiat 500 produced 17 BHP in its day. The most powerful Abarth 500 produced 38 BHP. 76 BHP in a Fiat 500 can only be described as an absolute scream! It shouldn’t be possible for this little machine to pull and handle the way it does, but thanks to Jimmy’s skill and that fabulous boxer engine, somehow it does!
