Description
It’s debatable who came up with the original design for the Chopper – both Tom Karen of Ogle Design and Alan Oakley of Raleigh both lay claim to it. Whoever was responsible, they created a British design icon of the early 1970’s.
The Mark 1 was only produced 1969-71 before safety concerns (they’re remarkably easy to wheelie) started to bite and the Mark 2 was introduced, and these days they’re in high demand. Every boy in the early 1970’s wanted one - I know I did.
This one, finished in Brilliant Orange, has recently been restored by a Chopper specialist to as-new standard, and is completely correct as far as I can tell. Possibly better than new in that the frame has been powder-coated, and the rear wheel fitted with stainless steel spokes.
Other work carried out to bring it to the standard shown includes
• Completely serviced Sturmey-Archer 3-speed rear hub, with new bearings
• Reproduction front and rear mudguards
• Reproduction seat cover
• Front hub greased
• Gear shifter serviced
• New front and rear tyres
• Seat has had new foam, seat frame repaired and repainted, brand new seat rivet fitted
• All new decals fitted
• Kick stand polished and greased
• New head and crank bearings fitted and greased
• Correct Mark 1 pedals fitted
• New chain fitted
She rides superbly, and if you want to be instantly transported back to the days of flared trousers, bad haircuts and the 3 day week, this is the time machine to do it on.
Or, instead of riding it, just display it in a man cave, or even your lounge – some people do!
