You are looking at a very rare Westfalia California Exclusive 2. 5 tdi 151 BHP (red ‘i’) camper van.
Registered in January 2003 it was imported into the UK by its German owners who purchased it new and then moved to the UK (Norwich) in 2015. It then passed to a Brighton-based architect and VW enthusiast in 2018 from whom I purchased it.
Since buying the van I have spent a small fortune getting it mechanically and bodily tip top, which includes:
LUK clutch, DMF and slave cylinder
New glow plugs
Front top and bottom ball joints (both sides)
Bilstein B9 suspension all round
New alternator belt
New temperature sensors
New detachable Westfalia tow bar
Eberspacher night heater completely refurbished by Eberspacher main dealer
Full engine service
The vast majority of the above work has been carried out by Andy Moore - T4 guru at AMP Auto Werks in Leeds (check out his Facebook page)
Additionally, the van had a cam belt and water pump service shortly before I purchased it.
The van is a genuine VW Westfalia Exclusive and I am aware of only a handful of other Exclusives in the country that have the 151 BHP engine - referenced by T4 enthusiasts as the red ‘i’ due to the distinctive red tdi badge. This is the largest power output engine in the T4 range and was only ever available as an option in Germany. It is based on a LWB Caravelle (not a basic panel van), so has all the luxury associated with the Caravelle marque, e. g. front and rear air con, heated seats, etc.
The van is in amazing condition.
It has covered 71k genuine miles (115k km) and is backed up with a full service history from both Germany and the UK. There is also a comprehensive service and importation file that comes with the van.
It also has the much larger brakes with ABS and a different turbo to uk spec vans.
The van has cruise control, front and rear air conditioning and heated front captains seats.
There is a bed in the roof and the rear seats fold out into a rock and roll type bed. Both front seats swivel to form a seating area. There is also a larger table that stores in the rear and a bespoke ladder to access the upper bunk. The bathroom is located to the rear where there is a Thetford cassette toilet and fold down sink. There is also a wardrobe with an integrated lockable safe - The kitchen has a decent sized fridge, 2 burner gas hob and sink with running water. The cabinetry is of the highest quality - not knock on trim, but proper doors and drawers that open and close as they should. Westfalia really nailed it with this van.
The van has an Eberspacher diesel night heater and fitted curtains all round. The windows are also double glazed.
There is a leisure battery and electric hook up with cable.
The awning on the side is a 3M Fiamma F45i and is huge and works as it should.
I have the original bike rack that bolts to the rear and there is a genuine Zolzer surfboard/ kayak rack that fits on the side of the roof.
These are very well made vans. I don’t feel you can compare to any other conversion out there. They are also crash tested and have 4, 3 point seat belts.
This will happily cruise at motorway speed all day and returns great fuel economy. The seats are comfortable and it rides tremendously well.
The van is in excellent condition both mechanically and bodily. I have owned a number of VW vans over the years and am really fussy. I can honestly say this van is in amazing condition - not ‘mint’ but not far off.
The interior is also in great condition with no rips or damage.
I have all the original books and paperwork and the van has 2 sets of keys. It is registered in my name to my home address.
It’s just had a full habitation check and a new genuine OEM roof light, together with new gas rams on the tailgate. It has also had a full air con service.
Everything works as it should on this van.
Always dry stored in the winter.
