HERE is my first ever Clan Crusader. It has taken me since 1971 to actually own one and now, here it is. The Clan Motor Company was founded in 1971 by two former Lotus engineers who wanted to design and build their own lightweight sports car. Production began in 1971 when Washington Development Corporation invited them to opt for factory space in their North-East new town. Around 25 people local people were given jobs and before their closure a couple of years later, a little more than 300 Crusaders had been built. They were a fibre glass body with an Imp Sport (Sunbeam Stiletto) twin carb unit fitted to the rear. Capable of more than 100mph, they gained many accolades before the early 70s and a three-day week saw the company grind to a halt.
This delightful old girl has just reached me having spent the past 14 years with a chap in the North-East. He has tinkered with and improved the Clan on and off during that spell of ownership. She is mega sound underneath and he tells me that the engine runs really sweetly. For me today, it did fire but coughed and spluttered a little. I am sure she will be fine with very little effort. There's a huge file with this Crusader, personal letters, receipts etc. A real piece of classic car social history.

My classic cars are motoring antiques. Please do not confuse them with your one-year-old Range Rover. This car, for example, is 49-years-old and so will have quirks and faults in there somewhere. These are not always apparent when buying and selling classics which is what I do. I do not restore them, nor do I pretend that they are concours cars. The majority of them go out as they came in, and I continue to enjoy finding more - a skill which is becoming increasingly difficult as many of you will be aware. They deserve to be taken on as "family pets" and cared for through thick and then. They don't make them any more and demand now out-strips supply.
