SOMETHING a touch more off-beat and rare today from Martin Howey Classics (Est. 25 years).
Here is my 1972 Toyota Crown Custom (or station wagon) 7-seater and what a super old girl this is. A one owner car from new, this Japanese gem has clearly led a sheltered life. I can remember them from first time around and they must have been rare enough back then. But to find one of these 2. 6cc straight-6 beauties today is something of a mega rarity!
Who could not have loved the look of that "space age" front end with the sidelights positioned high and forming such attractive curves? And as for the 70s colour scheme. Well wow. I'm not sure if it was Coleman's English Mustard or Angel Delight Butterscotch flavour! She is the 7-seater model with the fold-down double seat in the luggage compartment providing the extra seating. She sounds ever so sweet with that delightful engine and drives extremely well with an easy to handle auto column shift. There's perhaps something of an 70s American look to the styling of this tantalising Toyota. Like some station wagon that TV's The Brady Bunch might have travelled around in. Be that as it may, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I would say that she still wears her original paint work and so please be sympathetic towards touch ups on panels and arches etc. Some would go out of their way towards keeping this rare beast - now more than half a Century old - as she is since cars are only original once. Others, wanting a show car, would opt for a re-paint. However the photos do not lie and overall she is one hell of an eye-catching car! Appears to be sound underneath and her interior is just beautifully pure '70s! What a true classic this really is.
This description is based on my opinion of the vehicle, the paperwork that comes with the car and anything I have been told about it. The vehicle is 51-years-old and this cannot be taken as a definitive statement for obvious reasons. As with most classic cars, there may be faults and quirks whilst, almost inevitably, some degree of tinkering and care will always be called for. Such are the joys of owning an antique vehicle and they must be taken within their own context and not compared to modern day cars. They are sold as old, mainly out-dated machines and come without any comeback whatsoever. They are my terms and conditions.
My classic cars are motoring antiques. This car, for example, is 51-years-old. It's not two, five or even ten-years-old as your own everyday car may be. It has been in service for more than half a century and so will have quirks and faults in there somewhere. However, faults on these old girls are not always apparent when buying and selling classics which is what I do. I do not restore them, nor do I pretend that they are concours cars. The majority of them go out as they came in, and I continue to enjoy finding more - a skill which is becoming increasingly difficult as many of you will be aware. They deserve to be taken on as "family pets" and cared for through thick and then. They don't make them any more and demand now out-strips supply.
