SUMMARY
Originally supplied by Mercedes of Coldstream , and looked after by them in its early life. It was originally registered by the suppling dealership, then purchased by a very well heeled lady; the options specified on this car were far and above what would expect to find on your average W164, which was an already expensive vehicle before any of the option boxes were ticked. She owned the car for around the obligatory two years, after which it was bought by by a lady who owned it fot a further five years. It was then sold in November 2013 to a gentleman from Burnley, and who mainly used it to travel to and from his holiday home in Portugal, so he’d looked after it well so it was reliable, and many of the (actually below average) 106, 000 miles have been “low stress” covered on continental motorway. He owned this ML320 for ten years, and had planned to take it with him to Portugal when he moved there permanently on retirement, but on applying this year, it became very clear Portuguese bureaucracy would make it very uneconomical, so that option was ruled out, and he was forced to sell, which is when I bought it from him.
Like the last W164 ML I bought, I again stumbled across this one during one of my daily trawls of the Autotrader website. It was being sold fairly locally to me, and they’d been a lot of interest in the car as its relatively low mileage, and has a very attractive specification, moreover it’s one of the very few W164’s M-Class that were registered before 23rd March 2006, so falls into the cheaper road tax bracket; which at £395pa is almost half that of the later models. The upshot was I was first there, and bought it. I actually collected on a March day when it had, and was still snowing heavily, but it wasn’t a problem crossing the Pennine Moor roads on y way home, it just handled the snow covered roads and deep snow drifts with ease.
However, I know the W164 well, and as is usually the way, as good they appear to be, there’s always issues to address. I had a pretty good idea of what was required with this one, so wasn’t too concerned; the main attraction of this vehicle for me was its condition, low ownership, provenance and lower tax bracket; factors that can’t be put back, regardless of how much you spend. So, over the last six months, I’ve put this vehicle back on the right track. Over and above all the usual things I do to my cars (servicing, replacing trim, tyres etc), there were several more expensive issues (listed above) that needed addressing.
All this hasn’t come cheap, and the total spend has been around £2600, and that’s at my cost. However this means that whoever buys this will take ownership of an extremely well sorted example of a W164, and one with superb bodywork too. As I’ve previously mentioned, this car has spent hasn’t been used as “tractor” like most, and I don’t think it’s actually ever seen any off road use, so is in very good order.
So, if you’re looking for a superb, well sorted W164, that falls into the realistic road tax bracket you won’t go too far wring with this one. Although I’m in the business of selling cars, I always get quite attached to these M-Class’ so will be a little sad to see this one go, as there’s very few cars that deliver the same attributes in quite the same style and as well as a Mercedes M-Class.
THE MTSV DIFFERENCE
Unlike some, I don’t just simply go out, buy any old car, give it a good clean, then advertise it for more than the purchase price, disregarding any issues the car may have in the hope the new buyer won’t notice…I just couldn’t do that. The cars I source are carefully selected and I work very hard so that when my cars leave me, I have the satisfaction of knowing they are as good as they possibly can be within the constraints I have.
