FN M70 Sahara 1928
Document: austrian road registration
The FN M70 "Sahara" 348cc side valve with unit construction engine was the most produced FN motorcycle of the interwar period. It was famous for as the name says crossing the Sahara in the 1920s. Two French army officers and a Belgian mechanic crossed the Sahara desert with M 70s in 1927. They covered 6300 KM of desert without the machines failing them.
The model M70 had bore/ stroke dimensions of 74×80. 5 mm , unit construction engine and 3 speed gearbox.
This example was owned by a single owner for decades. The engine was extensively restored, crankshaft completely replaced, new bearings, gears replaced, valves, pistons, etc. The Bosch magneto was overhauled. This FN Sahara has a fully electric lighting system that includes a German Fenag headlight, a dynamo and a battery holder with battery, and is equipped with the original Gurtner two-slide brass carburettor. It has a large pillion saddle with the FN typical pillion footrest.
There are two beautiful historical enamel signs on the toolbox lid: Austrian Motor Drivers Association and Austrian Touring Club.
This FN Sahara rides very well and shifts easily.
